All That She Had

One elderly woman’s gift did more than save a church…it changed a nation.

Remember the Widow’s Mite story in the Bible? Jesus marveled at the widow’s sacrifice of two small copper coins.

Why? Because she offered all that she had and gave out of her need, not her surplus (Luke 21:1-4).

When we give from our hearts, it speaks volumes to God. To Him, even the smallest of Seeds can reap the biggest of Harvests. And what the world casts aside, the Lord can use to perform a miracle, big or small.

Here’s a good example:

Seoul, South Korea, 1973. The economy was in shambles. A young pastor who had a vision from God was prompted to build a church to reach the South Korean people.

However, people were out of work and few were making a decent wage. The pastor incurred huge debts because of the construction costs, and the structure was not nearly finished.

He became very depressed, almost suicidal. At one point, he even wished the ceiling rafters would fall on him and end his life.

Knowing that only a miracle could save his dream, he gathered together one evening to pray with other intercessors in their unfinished building. As they prayed, an old woman walked slowly in the pastor’s direction. Tears filled her eyes as she stood before him: “Pastor, I want to give these items to you so that you may sell them for a few pennies to help with our building fund.”

As he looked down, he could see in her wrinkled hands a common rice bowl and a pair of chopsticks.

“Sister, I can’t take these necessities from you,” the pastor said.

But she insisted. “These items are the only things in the world I possess. You must let me give them to Jesus. I know I will die soon, so I don’t want to meet Jesus without giving Him something on this earth.”

As she handed him her humble gift, everyone in the room was overcome with emotion. They choked back tears as they tried to lift up their prayers.

Finally, a businessman in the back of the room was deeply moved and came forward. He saw what this poor woman had done and offered one thousand dollars to buy the rice bowl and chopsticks.

The spirit of giving was contagious. One by one, everyone joined in and pledged their possessions and money to help finish the construction of the church building. From that day forward, rich and poor gave sacrificially, and incredible generosity swept through the congregation and the surrounding community.

Within several months, the church was built and the message of the Gospel began to spread. As a result, hundreds of thousands of people throughout South Korea have come to know Jesus as their Lord and Savior. The church that almost got abandoned became one of the largest congregations in the world!
