Wolves in Sheep’s Clothing: Recognizing True and False Shepherds

Inspiration MinistriesBy Inspiration Ministries8 Minutes

It starts the same way for so many people.

A shepherd they trusted…
A voice that once encouraged them…
A ministry that helped shape their walk with God…

Then something changes.

Maybe it’s a news report. Maybe it’s a slowly growing realization over time. Perhaps it’s the moment when preached words no longer match actions.

Suddenly, what once felt safe and sure becomes confusing, and sometimes even painful.

Questions begin to surface:

How did I miss this?
Was it ever real?
Can I trust spiritual shepherds again?

For too many believers today, this sense of disappointment has become all too familiar. It can shake our confidence. Not just in our spiritual leaders, but even in the Church itself.

This is not a new problem. Jesus warned us it would happen.

“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves” (Matthew 7:15).

The Pain Behind the Warning

Jesus did not give this warning about false prophets casually. He understood something we are now seeing more clearly in our time: deception is most dangerous when it appears cloaked in spiritual garb.

Spiritual wolves do not come announcing themselves. They do not appear threatening. They come dressed like sheep. They speak the right language, carry influence, possess a credible pedigree of biblical training, and some even appear to operate in the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus made it clear that the true test is not appearance. It is fruit.

“You will know them by their fruits” (Matthew 7:16).

That distinction matters, especially for those who have experienced the sting of disappointment. Feelings may alert us that something is wrong, but Scripture helps us understand why.

Wolves in Sheep’s Clothing in the Church Today

The Apostle Paul gave a sobering warning to church leaders:

“Savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. Also from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves” (Acts 20:29–30).

Paul is not describing outside persecution. He is describing danger arising from within the Church—powerful, even charismatic, voices in pulpits, influences among believers, and individuals drawing people toward themselves rather than toward Christ.

That is why the impact cuts so deeply. When trust is broken by someone who once shepherded you, it does more than wound. It disorients. What once felt like solid ground suddenly gives way.

Peter reveals what often lies beneath:

“In their greed they will exploit you with deceptive words” (2 Peter 2:3).

At its core, false leadership is rooted in self-interest. Whether it is influence, control, recognition, or personal gain, the focus shifts inward.

Not every leader begins that way. Many who fall started with sincere motives. Over time, however, the pull of money, recognition, and power can slowly redirect the heart.

God’s Standard for Shepherds

How can we guard ourselves when any leader is capable of falling? The answer is not found in suspicion, but in clarity. To discern what is false, we must clearly understand what is true.

Jesus defined godly leadership in direct contrast to self-serving ministry:

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep” (John 10:11).

A wolf takes from the sheep. A true shepherd lays down his life for them.

Jesus did not only teach this—He demonstrated it. On the night before the cross, He took a towel and a basin:

“He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet” (John 13:5).

The One with all authority in heaven and on earth chose the lowest place. Then, He said:

“I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you” (John 13:15).

True spiritual leadership is not about position. It is about heart posture.

The Tragedy of Self-Serving Shepherds

God has always taken this seriously. Through the prophet Ezekiel, He spoke directly to leaders who had abandoned their calling:

Thus says the Lord God to the shepherds: ‘Woe to the shepherds of Israel who feed themselves! Should not the shepherds feed the flocks?’ (Ezekiel 34:2).

Through the prophet, God rebukes those who:

  • Strengthen themselves instead of the weak
  • Neglect the hurting
  • Use their role for personal gain

How to Recognize True Shepherds vs. False Shepherds

Scripture provides a clear picture of godly leadership:

“Shepherd the flock of God … not for dishonest gain, but eagerly; nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock” (1 Peter 5:2–3).

A true shepherd:

  • Serves willingly
  • Gives rather than takes
  • Leads by example, not coercive control
  • Points people to Jesus—not to themselves

Their life reflects the humility of Christ:

“Let nothing be done through selfish ambition … but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself” (Philippians 2:3).

Walking in Discernment Without Losing Heart

If you have ever felt let down by a spiritual leader, you are not alone.

Here is the anchor: the failure of a spiritual leader does not redefine the character of Christ.

Jesus is still the Good Shepherd.
He is still—and always will be—faithful.

That is why Scripture tells us:

“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits” (1 John 4:1).

Discernment is not about becoming cynical. It is about becoming grounded in truth.

A Call Back to Christlike Leadership

In a time when trust can be easily shaken, God is calling His Church back to a clear and uncompromising standard.

Leadership is not about a platform. It is about sacrifice.
It is not about being served. It is about serving.
It is not about building a name. It is about lifting up His name.

The difference between a wolf and a shepherd is not always revealed in what they say, but in how they live—and who ultimately benefits.

If you have been harmed by a false shepherd, God offers you this promise of hope:

“I will give you shepherds according to My heart, who will feed you with knowledge and understanding” (Jeremiah 3:15).

Jesus, the Good Shepherd—God’s Son—still stands as the model.

For every believer who has felt disappointed or disillusioned, His invitation remains unchanged:

Follow Me.

In following Him, you will never be led astray.
