What Will I Have to Give Up to Become a Christian?

Melissa HendersonBy Melissa Henderson3 Minutes

“What will I have to give up to become a Christian?” This question has been presented at various times in history. A person seeking to know God or to learn about Christianity may inquire about the changes needed in their words and actions. Notice that the question does not focus on God or being a Christian. The focus is on the self.

Scripture tells us we are saved when we confess Jesus as Lord and believe in the resurrection. When we decide to become Christians and follow God, we have the opportunity to develop a deep relationship with the Father. Does that mean we will never sin again? No. Humans sin. Yet, when we become Christians, the door is open from Jesus to God.

“If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved” (Romans 10:9-10 NIV).

If a person is more concerned about what they have to give up to become a Christian, they are worried about themselves and don’t truly grasp the importance of knowing God. Being a Christian means you give up the reliance on self. Christians know their hope is found in God. Although we will fail and sin, God forgives His children when we confess, repent, and ask for His forgiveness.

Our words and actions can lead others to know the Father. Jesus called certain people to leave their lifestyle and follow Him. Jesus called Peter, Andrew, James, and John, and they listened and obeyed. The men left their fishing boats and went with Jesus. Jesus called Matthew, a tax collector. At that time in history, tax collectors were sometimes despised. Yet, Jesus called Matthew to follow. Other disciples who followed Jesus shared the gospel and helped people to know God. The disciples gave up their jobs and money. Does that mean we should quit our jobs and wait for God to send us on a mission? No. Prayer is the answer. Pray and listen for His guidance. You may have heard the expression about God equipping you to where He leads you.

When we respond to God’s call, we are assured of His love and peace. Our love for God will lead us to leave the old ways and to seek new ways to help others know Him. Whatever we give up to become a Christian will bring us closer to God.

In His Name,
