Spiritual Detox: Second Dangerous Thought Pattern

Kim CrabillBy Kim Crabill4 Minutes

If not careful we are going to take the life principles we hear — what has been quoted through the generations — as God’s Word. Sayings like, “Cleanliness is next to Godliness” or “God will not give us more than we can handle” are not biblical principles on which to build our spiritual life. This thinking that perhaps came down from Grandma, a particular denomination, or what is being quoted on social media.

Reading God’s Word is crucial in our spiritual detoxing success as it helps us recognize unholy thoughts to reject and replace.

Hello everyone and welcome to Strengthen Your Walk. I’m Kim Crabill.

In our last time together, we began to talk about what we are thinking about and questioning if our thoughts truly represent the truth and the fullness of Scripture.

Using three different translations of 2 Corinthians 10:5:

We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

We were introduced to two dangerous thought patterns this scripture presents that must be demolished and detoxed.

Yesterday, we talked about False Reasoning. False reasoning occurs when we arrive at a conclusion about something based on our own intellect and understanding.

Today, let’s talk about the second thought pattern.

2. Exalted Thinking Above God. This is the foundational error of thinking that says we don’t really need God.

I’m smart. I’m educated. I have experience. I’ll figure it out.

This philosophy lifts our own thoughts above God’s and leads to self-glorification, self-adoration, and self-sufficiency. What we think is what should follow. How we feel should be nurtured. If it feels good, we should do it.

Exalted thinking is the opposite mindset of repentance. It’s the mindset of “Why should I say I’m sorry? You were wrong! It’s your fault!” thinking. Exalted thinking holds grudges, keeps records of wrong-doing. It is the banner of pride displayed at its optimal level.

In contrast, repentance is the mindset that hurts when it sins against God. The Christ-like mindset can never really rest until it’s done all to make relationships all they can be.

Throughout history, as societies reject or move away from the knowledge of God, a civilization grows more corrupt, cruel, and debased. There’s a rise in evil and a decline in personal integrity, responsibility, and decency.

(Perhaps you are thinking … just like today.)

But here’s the good news: The world needs Jesus and Jesus has made Himself fully available to the world. And because as believers, you and I know Him, we can introduce Him to the world. Each of us as God’s people is called to walk away from the life of error, false sayings, or happy little mantras toward a higher standard in Christ. God is asking us to detox our useless thoughts, curb our grumbling and arguing, so that through Him we can become blameless and pure … children of God … without fault in a warped and crooked generation so that we can shine in the darkness like the stars! (Philippians 2:14-15). We  can disengage, demolish, and detox everything that is not obedient to Christ — so that His Name might be glorified!

Now this is truth to live by!

Friends, as you open God’s Word and fix your thoughts on God — God will be faithful to fill your thoughts with His truth and wisdom … and this will surely Strengthen Your Walk.
