Reminders of God

Reminders of God

Sometimes we need reminders of God. In our day-to-day lives much of what happens takes our minds away from God. Work, smartphones, hardships, current events, and even household chores can take our minds away from God. But God, knowing our wayward minds, places reminders of Himself everywhere we go.

As a person who enjoys the outdoors, I see many reminders of God in His creation. Unfortunately, I live in the suburbs and my regular life so often keeps me away from the outdoors. God shows Himself even in the busyness and distractions of life.

A few years back I worked as a gas pump attendant for a large wholesale warehouse club. The club sat back in a plaza area on the corner of a major suburban intersection. The gas station was right next to the road. Since most people pumped their own gas, I mostly observed and made sure simple needs were met.

One evening, right after sunset, nature gave me a reminder of God. As the sun disappeared below the horizon, the clouds above began to beam a glorious red and magenta as they pressed against a twilight blue sky. It was a marvelous view of nature above a busy suburban intersection. I paused and took in the amazing display of glory. I worshipped God in my heart and mind as I stood there and gazed.

In the monotony of my job, God came shining through.

I then began to wonder, “How many people driving by and hurrying back to their homes even noticed this? And of those who notice it, how many paused to truly take it in?” As Psalm 97:6 says, “The heavens proclaim His righteousness; all the peoples see His glory” (NASB). But sadly, how many decided to appreciate it and let it capture them?

Reminders of God fill our lives if and when we choose to see them. Small things in creation, like flowers, can reveal God to us. The Bible says God created them with all their beauty and intricate detail. Jesus declared, “And why are you worried about clothing? Observe how the lilies of the field grow; they do not toil nor do they spin, yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these” (Matthew 6:28-29 NASB).

God has also given us other things to remind us of Him. He gives us a child’s laugh, human love, a table full of food, an act of courage, a garden full of life, birds at a birdfeeder and so many more things to serve as reminders of Him. Even special events and time spent with family and friends serve as reminders of God. He is the giver of all good things.

As you go about your day, remember to look at the sky and know that it reminds us of God. Then look around and see the flowers and all the other little reminders of Him that surround you. I promise that reminders of God are everywhere when we choose to open our eyes to them.
