Why Is Jesus Worth Following?: Discover the Meaning Behind His Names
Every leader asks for followers.
Politicians promise change. Influencers promise fulfillment. Self-help experts promise success. Yet history is filled with leaders who failed to live up to the hopes people placed in them.
Jesus makes a simple invitation:
“Follow Me.”
But before we decide whether to follow anyone, we should ask one important question:
“Who is He?”
The Bible answers that question long before Jesus was born. More than 700 years before His birth, the prophet Isaiah described the coming Messiah with four remarkable names. Each one reveals why Jesus alone is worthy of our trust, our worship, and our wholehearted devotion.
What’s in a Name?
Few things are more exciting for expecting parents than choosing a baby’s name. Some families pass names down through generations. Others search for something unique that perfectly captures their hopes for their child.
Now imagine an angel telling you exactly what to name your baby, and then explaining that this child would become the Savior of the world.
That’s exactly what happened to Mary.
The angel Gabriel declared:
“And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High” (Luke 1:31-32, ESV).
The name Jesus comes from the Hebrew name Yeshua, meaning “The LORD saves.” His very name revealed His mission.
Matthew’s Gospel makes this even clearer:
“You shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21, ESV).
Jesus didn’t simply come to teach better morals or offer helpful advice. He came to rescue humanity from sin and restore us to a relationship with God.
His name tells us who He is. But Scripture reveals even more.
More than seven centuries before Jesus’ birth, Isaiah gave us four prophetic titles that beautifully describe His character.
“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6, ESV).
Each title answers the question:
“Why should I follow Jesus?”
-
Jesus Is Our Wonderful Counselor
Life is full of decisions.
Some are small. Others shape the course of our lives.
In a world overflowing with opinions, Jesus offers something infinitely better than popular advice—perfect wisdom.
Isaiah later described God as One who is “wonderful in counsel and excellent in wisdom” (Isaiah 28:29, ESV). Jesus perfectly embodies that wisdom. He never misjudges a situation. He never overlooks an important detail. He never leads His people down the wrong path.
Unlike the world’s changing opinions, His truth never changes.
Even better, Jesus understands our struggles. He experienced temptation, sorrow, rejection, and suffering, yet without sin. He knows exactly what we face and lovingly guides us through it.
What this means for you today: When you’re uncertain about your next step, don’t rely solely on your own understanding. Seek the Wonderful Counselor through prayer and His Word. His direction is always trustworthy.
-
Jesus Is Our Mighty God
Jesus was much more than an extraordinary teacher.
He is God in the flesh.
He demonstrated His divine power by calming storms, healing diseases, casting out demons, feeding thousands, and raising the dead. Then, after giving His life on the cross for our sins, He rose victoriously from the grave.
Only God could accomplish that.
Because Jesus is our Mighty God, nothing you face is beyond His power. No addiction is too strong. No broken relationship is beyond His healing. No impossible situation is outside His ability to redeem.
Our confidence isn’t based on our strength. It’s based on His.
What this means for you today: Whatever challenge stands before you, remember that the Savior you follow is also the Almighty God who reigns over heaven and earth.
-
Jesus Is Our Everlasting Father
When Isaiah described Jesus as our Everlasting Father, he was describing the Messiah’s fatherly care for His people. Like a loving father, Jesus protects, provides, leads, and compassionately shepherds those who belong to Him.
His care never ends.
Jesus told Philip, “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father” (John 14:9, ESV). He perfectly reveals the Father’s heart because He and the Father are perfectly united in purpose and nature.
As the Good Shepherd, Jesus watches over His flock with unwavering love. He never abandons His people, and He never grows weary of caring for them.
What this means for you today: Whether you’re celebrating a season of blessing or walking through a valley of uncertainty, Jesus remains faithful. His love is constant and unchanging even as your circumstances continually change.
-
Jesus Is Our Prince of Peace
Peace is one of the deepest longings of the human heart.
Yet true peace cannot be found simply by eliminating conflict or escaping life’s pressures.
The peace Jesus offers is much greater.
Through His death and resurrection, He gives us peace with God. As we trust Him, He fills our hearts with peace that steadies us in anxious moments. One day He will return to establish His eternal Kingdom, where peace will reign forever.
Isaiah declared, “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you” (Isaiah 26:3, ESV).
The Prince of Peace doesn’t merely calm our circumstances.
He calms our hearts.
What this means for you today: When anxiety begins to rise, turn your thoughts toward Christ. His presence can quiet your soul even when your circumstances remain unchanged.
Jesus Truly Lives Up to His Name
Many people throughout history have earned impressive titles. Only Jesus has perfectly fulfilled every one given to Him.
He is our Savior.
Our Wonderful Counselor.
Our Mighty God.
Our Everlasting Father.
Our Prince of Peace.
His names reveal His character. His character inspires our trust. His life, death, and resurrection prove that He alone is worthy of our complete devotion.
That’s why Jesus isn’t merely someone to admire from a distance.
He is the One worth following every day of our lives.
