How to Make Time for God When Life Gets Busy

Greg BentleyBy Greg Bentley8 Minutes

Life moves fast.

Every day comes with deadlines, appointments, responsibilities, and endless demands on our attention. Parents rush children out the door. Students hurry to school. Professionals race from meeting to meeting. Even our evenings are quickly filled with family activities, hobbies, church events, and community commitments.

Busy isn’t unusual anymore; it’s expected.

Yet amid all those responsibilities, one question deserves honest reflection:

Why is our time with God so often the first appointment we cancel?

We Protect What Matters Most

Think about the commitments you rarely miss.

Maybe it’s work. Maybe it’s a child’s soccer game. Maybe it’s a weekly golf game, a workout, or a class you’re taking. When something is truly important to us, we adjust our schedule to protect it.

Most of us don’t accidentally miss those appointments. We make them happen!

That’s what makes our relationship with God so revealing. We often say He is our highest priority, yet our daily schedule sometimes tells a different story.

Good Things Can Replace the Greatest Thing

Several years ago, a respected leader asked our team a simple question: “Are you good soil?”

Immediately I thought, Of course I am. I love Jesus. I’ve committed my life to serving Him.

Then came the follow-up question: “What fruit is your life producing?”

That question stopped me.

I realized my life was full of good things—even ministry—but not everything filling my schedule was deepening my relationship with God.

It’s possible to stay incredibly busy doing things for God while neglecting time with God.

Church involvement, serving others, leading ministries, and helping people are all wonderful pursuits. But none of them can replace simply sitting with your heavenly Father.

Your Heart Follows Your Priorities

Jesus taught that the greatest commandment is to:

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength” (Mark 12:30, ESV).

That kind of love isn’t measured only by our words. It’s reflected in our priorities.

If we’re honest, many of us don’t struggle to spend time with God because we don’t love Him. We struggle because life continually competes for our attention.

Every notification, deadline, hobby, responsibility, and distraction quietly asks the same question: What will come first today?

Over time, our calendar often reveals what our heart truly treasures.

God Isn’t Looking for Leftover Time

One of the greatest misconceptions Christians can have is believing God simply wants whatever time we happen to have left. Scripture paints a different picture.

Throughout the Bible, God repeatedly called His people to seek Him first (Matthew 6:33). Jesus Himself regularly withdrew from the crowds to spend time alone with His Father (Luke 5:16).

If the Son of God protected time for prayer, how much more do we need it?

God doesn’t invite us into His presence because He needs our attention. He invites us because we need Him.

Time with God:

  • Renews our perspective;
  • strengthens our faith;
  • shapes our character;
  • and reminds us whose we are before we face the pressures of the day.

Make Time with God Non-Negotiable

If you’re waiting until life slows down before spending consistent time with God, you’ll probably wait forever. Instead, decide that your time with Him is an appointment you simply won’t cancel.

Start with just fifteen focused minutes in God’s Word and prayer. Protect that time. Turn off distractions. Listen more than you speak. Ask the Holy Spirit to teach you as you read Scripture.

As that relationship deepens, you’ll find yourself spending more time, not because of obligation, but because you enjoy being with your Father.

The Greatest Win

The title of this article could have been, Why do we choose to lose?

Because the truth is, every time we allow lesser priorities to crowd out our relationship with God, we lose something we can never replace. But when we consistently seek Him first, everything else begins to find its proper place.

Jesus promised:

“Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you” (Matthew 6:33, ESV).

God has already demonstrated His love through Christ. Now He invites you to know Him more deeply.

Protect that appointment.

You will never regret time spent with the One who loves you most.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is spending time with God every day important?

Daily time with God strengthens your relationship with Him, renews your mind through Scripture, and equips you to face life’s challenges with wisdom, peace, and faith.

How can I make time for God when I’m busy?

Treat your time with God like any other important appointment. Schedule it, protect it from distractions, and begin with a realistic amount of time you can consistently maintain.

What does it mean to seek God first?

Seeking God first means making your relationship with Him the highest priority in your life. It doesn’t mean ignoring responsibilities, but allowing your relationship with Christ to shape every other priority.

Is quiet time with God the same as going to church?

No. Corporate worship and fellowship are essential, but they cannot replace your personal relationship with God through daily prayer and Bible reading.

Can serving in ministry replace personal devotion?

No. Ministry is an overflow of your relationship with God, not a substitute for it. Even Jesus regularly withdrew from ministry to spend time alone with His Father.

What if I miss a day?

Don’t let guilt keep you away. Simply begin again. God’s invitation to draw near remains open every day through Christ.

How long should my daily devotional time be?

There is no biblical rule about length. Consistency matters more than duration. Even fifteen focused minutes each day can become the foundation of a growing relationship with God.

What Bible verse teaches us to put God first?

Matthew 6:33 is one of the clearest passages: “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
