Living Out the Great Commission

How to Live Out the Great Commission (Even If You’re Not an Evangelist)

Inspiration MinistriesBy Inspiration Ministries8 Minutes

Not everyone feels bold enough to preach on a street corner or lead someone to Christ in the grocery line. But the Great Commission isn’t just for gifted evangelists. You have a role too—and this article will help you discover how your everyday life, story, and obedience can make an eternal impact.

Living the Great Commission

You’re probably familiar with the Great Commission:

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you …” (Matthew 28:19-20).

Some Christians seem to shine in this area, sharing Jesus with a smile wherever they go. God moves in their spirits at key moments, and they naturally (even magnetically) move the conversation in that direction, with souls being added to the Kingdom on a regular basis.

But for many of us, sharing the Gospel doesn’t come naturally.

What does it mean if you’re not a gifted evangelist like Billy Graham … or if that’s nowhere near the top of your list of spiritual gifts? Are we all meant to share Jesus in the same way?

Is Evangelism the Only Way?

We often fall into one of two traps when it comes to the Great Commission.

Some church cultures emphasize soul-winning so strongly that believers start to feel guilty if they’re not constantly leading people to Christ. The pressure can be overwhelming—especially for those who don’t feel naturally wired for bold evangelism.

On the other end of the spectrum, some communities treat evangelism as someone else’s job. It’s left to the pastors, missionaries, or a few gifted individuals—while the rest of the church stays on the sidelines, unsure where they fit in.

Neither extreme reflects God’s full design.

The Great Commission is for every believer. But God knows what He’s doing—and He didn’t create us to carry it out in identical ways. He designed the church to be a body—each member with different gifts and different roles. When we each embrace our part, the Gospel spreads further, deeper, and with greater impact.

Discovering Your Role in the Mission

First, know this: You can share Jesus—whether it’s through social media, quiet conversations over coffee, or prayerfully supporting others in ministry. Much of the Great Commission is fulfilled in how we show up in everyday life.

Evangelists often shine in their ability to create moments to share Jesus. Yet even if your own gift leans more toward helping, shepherding, or sharing wisdom, God creates moments for you to share His grace within those areas of ministry. For instance:

  • If your gift is mercy: He may lead you to share Jesus’ saving grace in the midst of someone’s deepest hurt or crisis.
  • If your gift is leadership: People may notice your character, decisions, and how you care for others—prompting them to ask what makes you different.
  • If you have a teaching gift: You’re not just equipped to share the Gospel—you can also serve in another part of the Great Commission: making disciples.

Salvation and Discipleship: Both Matter

The Great Commission doesn’t stop with salvation—leaving new believers with no idea how to live out their faith. In fact, the Great Commission commands us to “make disciples” and teach them “to observe all that I have commanded you.”

That automatically means we’re not done once someone has prayed a salvation prayer. We’re called to help them grow spiritually…and to keep growing ourselves. When we do, we become visible examples of faith lived out—offering a real alternative to the confusion of the world around us.

Simple Ways to Share the Gospel

Even if evangelism isn’t your top gift, you can still make a powerful impact for Christ in daily life. Here are just a few things anyone can do:

  • Pray for someone who’s hurting—and listen for God’s leading
  • Share a word of encouragement or a verse that spoke to you
  • Post a simple testimony on social media
  • Invite a friend to church, Bible study, or an online teaching
  • Support Gospel outreach and discipleship efforts
  • Serve with compassion wherever God places you

The point isn’t to do everything. It’s to say “yes” to what God calls you to do.

Equipped to Make a Difference

As you live out your part in God’s mission, Inspiration Ministries is here to walk alongside you. That’s why our team is so passionate. We’re not only focused on “going into all the world” to share the Gospel—but also on helping believers become more like Christ every day.

You’ll see that heart in everything we create—in our salvation video, discipleship articles, YouTube teaching series, growing Spanish outreach, and the interactive journeys inside the Spiritual Growth Hub.

Shining the Light of Christ

The Great Commission asks us all to “go”—showing His love as we bring our gifts and story to impact the moments God places us in.

When the news updates are all dark …

When the people around you act selfish or rude …

Or when you see someone struggling because they’ve lost all hope in the human race and just don’t know how they’re going to make it through the day …

You shine the light of Christ.

And when a conversation opens up because of it, just stay ready. Listen for the wisdom of the Holy Spirit at the right moment. They’ll see something different in you, because that light shining from you can’t be hidden—and they’ll want that “something different.”

You’re Already Part of the Mission

At Inspiration Ministries, we believe every act of obedience—every time you reflect Christ’s love—plays a role in the Great Commission.

Through your prayers, your presence, and your partnership, you’re helping to share the Gospel around the world. You’re helping disciple believers through practical tools like the Spiritual Growth Hub, our Strengthen Your WalkTM teaching series, and our growing Spanish outreach.

This Giving Tuesday, we invite you to stand with us in this calling. Whether you’re the one planting, watering, or harvesting, you are part of God’s Kingdom work.
