The Promise of the Holy Spirit (Part 2): What Are the Gifts of the Holy Spirit? How God Empowers Believers to Serve

This article is Part 2 of our series, “The Promise of the Holy Spirit,” exploring how the gifts of the Holy Spirit equip believers for humble, faithful service.

Have you ever wondered where you fit in the body of Christ?

Maybe you’ve watched others teach, lead, pray, encourage, give, or serve and wondered, “Does God have a way to use me too?”

The answer is yes.

If you belong to Jesus, your life has purpose in His body. The Holy Spirit does more than dwell within believers. He empowers and equips God’s people, working through them as they serve one another, strengthen the Church, and point others to Christ.

Spiritual gifts are not given so believers can compare themselves, seek attention, or feel more important than others. They are gifts of grace, entrusted by God for the good of His people and the glory of Jesus.

So, what are the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and why do they matter?

In Short: The Gifts of the Holy Spirit

The gifts of the Holy Spirit are God-given abilities, callings, and manifestations of the Spirit that empower believers for Spirit-led service.

They are meant to build up the body of Christ, serve others in love, strengthen believers, equip God’s people for ministry, and glorify Jesus.

They are not earned by spiritual performance. They are given by the Holy Spirit according to His wisdom and will.

When spiritual gifts are understood this way, they become less about comparison and more about love.

They are not badges of importance. They are ways the Holy Spirit empowers believers to serve.

What Does the Bible Say About Spiritual Gifts?

Several New Testament passages describe spiritual gifts, including 1 Corinthians 12, Romans 12, Ephesians 4, and 1 Peter 4.

Paul writes:

“Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit” (1 Corinthians 12:4).

Spiritual gifts are diverse, but they come from the same God. Not every believer has the same gift, but every gift has a purpose.

Paul continues:

“To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good” (1 Corinthians 12:7).

That phrase—for the common good—is key.

Spiritual gifts are not mainly about personal fulfillment. They are about Spirit-led service. God gives gifts so His people can build one another up and bear witness to Jesus together.

The Holy Spirit gives these gifts according to His wisdom and will:

“All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills” (1 Corinthians 12:11).

The same Spirit who gives the gifts also supplies the power to use them faithfully.

This means spiritual gifts are not something believers manufacture by effort or claim for status. They are entrusted by God.

You do not have to compare your gift to someone else’s. You do not have to force yourself into a role God has not given you. The Holy Spirit knows how to equip the body of Christ.

Your part is to surrender, serve faithfully, and depend on the Holy Spirit to empower you to use what God has given you in love.

What Are Examples of Spiritual Gifts in the Bible?

Scripture does not present spiritual gifts as a way to rank believers. It presents them as a picture of God’s varied grace at work through His people.

Some gifts mentioned in the New Testament include:

  • Wisdom
  • Knowledge
  • Faith
  • Healing
  • Miracles
  • Prophecy
  • Discernment
  • Tongues
  • Interpretation of tongues
  • Teaching
  • Serving
  • Encouragement
  • Giving
  • Leadership
  • Mercy
  • Evangelists
  • Pastors and teachers

These gifts are not given so believers can build a platform for themselves. They are given so the church can be strengthened and Christ can be honored.

Every Spirit-given gift is a way to love.

It may look like someone teaching God’s Word with humility. It may look like a friend offering encouragement at the right time. It may look like a volunteer serving quietly behind the scenes or welcoming someone who feels alone.

Some gifts are visible. Others are quiet. But visibility does not determine value.

Paul writes:

“For the body does not consist of one member but of many” (1 Corinthians 12:14).

The person who teaches is not more important than the person who serves. The person who leads is not more loved by God than the person who shows mercy.

Every believer has a place in the body of Christ.

You do not need someone else’s gift to be useful to God. You can serve Him faithfully with the grace He has given you.

How Should Spiritual Gifts Be Used?

Spiritual gifts must be used with humility, love, and faithfulness to God’s Word.

Peter writes:

“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace” (1 Peter 4:10).

The word stewards reminds us that spiritual gifts belong to God. We do not own them for selfish use. We steward them for His purposes.

This means spiritual gifts should never be used to manipulate, control, shame, impress, or draw attention to ourselves. They are given to serve.

A gift used without love can wound.

A gift submitted to Jesus can strengthen.

That is why Paul places 1 Corinthians 13—the chapter on love—right between his teaching on spiritual gifts in 1 Corinthians 12 and his instruction about order in worship in 1 Corinthians 14.

Paul writes:

“If I … have not love, I am nothing” (1 Corinthians 13:2).

Spiritual gifts are not a substitute for love. They are meant to be expressions of love.

The goal is not to appear spiritual. The goal is to serve others in a way that honors Christ.

Love guards the gift from pride. Love keeps service tender.

Love reminds us that people are not projects. Love points the attention back to Jesus.

This is why the gifts of the Spirit and the fruit of the Spirit belong together.

The gifts of the Spirit show how God equips His people.

The fruit of the Spirit shows how God shapes His people.

Gifts and character were never meant to be separated.

How Can You Discover Your Spiritual Gifts?

Many believers wonder, “How do I know how God has gifted me?”

You can begin discovering your spiritual gifts by walking closely with Jesus, studying Scripture, praying for wisdom, serving faithfully, and paying attention to how God uses you to strengthen others.

Spiritual gifts are often discovered through faithful obedience, not pressure.

You may begin by serving where there is a need. Over time, the Lord may show you where He has especially equipped you. Other believers may also notice how God encourages, teaches, helps, leads, or serves through you.

Ask questions like:

  • How has God used me to strengthen others?
  • What needs in the body of Christ move my heart?
  • Where do mature believers see God’s grace at work in me?
  • Am I using what God has given me with humility and love?
  • Does this service point people to Jesus?

You do not need to obsess over naming your gift before you begin serving.

Start with love.

Start with obedience.

Start with surrender.

And if you do not know your spiritual gift yet, you are not behind.

God is not asking you to compare yourself with someone else. He is inviting you to walk with Him. Sometimes gifts are discovered quietly. Sometimes they are confirmed through the encouragement of other believers. Sometimes they grow as you mature in faith.

You can trust the Lord with the process.

The goal is not to figure yourself out perfectly. The goal is to faithfully follow Jesus.

One Last Thought: Your Gift Is Meant to Serve

The gifts of the Holy Spirit are not trophies. They are tools for love.

God gives spiritual gifts so His people can serve one another, strengthen the Church, and point the world to Jesus.

You may not feel impressive. You may not have a visible role. You may not know exactly how God wants to use you yet.

But if you belong to Christ, your life has purpose in His body.

You do not have to serve in your own strength. The same Spirit who gives gifts also gives power and grace to use them with humility and love.

In Part 3, we’ll look at the fruit of the Spirit and how the Holy Spirit forms Christlike character in those who belong to Jesus.
