God’s Appointed Time to Bless You

This time of year, I always get excited about God’s promises to bless His people in extraordinary ways when they honor Him during the Feast of Tabernacles. Along with the other amazing blessings associated with the Feasts of Passover and Pentecost (Exodus 23), Tabernacles is unique in its association with the Lord’s desire to give us a double portion of His blessings.

A Picture of the Double Portion

This double portion is illustrated in Joel 2:23, where God says He will give us BOTH the “former rain” AND the “latter rain” in the same month as the Feast of Tabernacles. It would be a time to experience a double shower of blessings.

Friend, the Feast of Tabernacles is this month. So I hope God has been raising your expectancy for an outpouring of breakthroughs from Heaven!

Understanding the Parable of the Talents

One of the biblical stories related to the Feast of Tabernacles is Jesus’ Parable of the Talents, found in Matthew 25:14–30 (NLT):

The Kingdom of Heaven can be illustrated by the story of a man going on a long trip. He called together his servants and entrusted his money to them while he was gone. He gave five bags of silver to one, two bags of silver to another, and one bag of silver to the last – dividing it in proportion to their abilities. He then left on his trip (vs. 14–15).

One thing is apparent from the onset of Jesus’ story: Each of these men had a different starting point. The master didn’t entrust to them equal amounts of money. While some people today argue that everyone should be given the same amount, that’s just not how life works. Jesus’ parable is an acknowledgement of that fact.

Also, notice that the servants received amounts “in proportion to their abilities.” We may think that God just randomly blesses some people more than others, but often He distributes resources based on people’s ability to display faithful stewardship. If we’re proven trustworthy in little things, we’ll typically be entrusted with greater things (Luke 16:10).

As the story unfolds, we see that the starting point for these men was not the same as the ending point. That’s very good news for us as well! We may start out with a meager amount, but that doesn’t mean we’re destined to remain in that condition. By making the right choices, we can improve our circumstances:

The servant who received the five bags of silver began to invest the money and earned five more. The servant with two bags of silver also went to work and earned two more. But the servant who received the one bag of silver dug a hole in the ground and hid the master’s money (vs. 16–18).

Faithfulness Unlocks the Double Portion

What a wonderful outcome for the first servants. They doubled their master’s investment. By faithfully investing the portion they’d been given, they ended up with a double portion! In fact, the only servant who didn’t receive a double portion was the one who buried his single portion in the ground.

If you were hearing this story for the first time, you might be on the edge of your seat, wondering how the master would react when he came home. Would he feel sorry for the third servant, perhaps giving him additional money because he was falling so far short of his comrades? Or maybe he would take money from the overachieving servants to level the playing field.

Quite the contrary to what we may have expected, the master commended the first two servants but felt no sympathy at all for the third. Both of the servants who invested their money received the same beautiful words of commendation:

Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Let’s celebrate together! (vs. 20–23).

Our lifetime quest should be to hear these same words  when we stand before the Lord in Heaven. As our Inspiration Partners have faithfully invested in God’s Kingdom, I know they will all be greeted by these precious words in eternity, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”

Fear Will Rob You of Blessing

Unfortunately, things didn’t turn out so well for the third servant:

Then the servant with the one bag of silver came and said, “Master, I knew you were a harsh man, harvesting crops you didn’t plant and gathering crops you didn’t cultivate. I was afraid I would lose your money, so I hid it in the earth. Look, here is your money back.”

But the master replied, “You wicked and lazy servant! If you knew I harvested crops I didn’t plant and gathered crops I didn’t cultivate, why didn’t you deposit my money in the bank? At least I could have gotten some interest on it” (vs. 24–27).

What a striking contrast between how the master responded to these servants. To both of the first two men, he said, “Well done!” While they had shown themselves to be “good and faithful,” he described the other man as “You wicked and lazy servant!”

What was the fundamental difference between these three servants? It’s really this simple:

The first two men acted in FAITH, and the other man acted in FEAR.

Before the first servants received the return on their investment, they had to take steps of faith to put their master’s money to work. Investments have a certain degree of risk involved, and that’s why faith must dispel the fear.

The third man, in stark contrast, confessed to his master, “I was afraid I would lose your money, so I hid it.” He misjudged the character of the master and misunderstood the law of Sowing and Reaping.

Rather than taking steps of faith, the third servant took steps of fear. And rather than receive a double portion, as the other servants did, he ended up losing even what he had. How surprising that the servant who started with five bags of silver first doubled his master’s investment then received one more bag of silver for good measure.

The Path to Well Done

Remember the amazing lesson found in this story. The surest way to receive a DOUBLE portion from God is to give Him the SINGLE portion you already have!

Not only will your reward in Heaven be great, but you will also unlock more of God’s blessings during your earthly life.
