Elohim: The God Who Was There Before the Light

Inspiration MinistriesBy Inspiration Ministries•12 Minutes

Elohim is the first Hebrew word Scripture uses for God, revealing Him as the all-powerful Creator. There is no greater power than the God who spoke light into darkness, and He is still near today.

Before there was a sunrise, there was God. Before mountains rose above the earth, before oceans stretched toward the horizon, before birds crossed the sky or a human heart beat for the first time, Elohim was there.

Scripture takes us back to a beginning we can hardly imagine: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). The Hebrew word translated God is אֱלֹהִים—Elohim. Here it unmistakably names the one true God, sovereign over all creation and unmatched in power and authority.

Genesis tells us that the earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep. Nothing yet looked the way it would when God was finished, but the darkness was not empty of His presence. The Spirit of God hovered over the waters, and then Elohim spoke: “Let there be light” (Genesis 1:3).

At His word, darkness gave way. Light appeared where there had been none, waters moved into place, land appeared, vegetation rose from the earth, and the heavens filled with lights. Soon the seas teemed with living creatures, birds filled the sky, and life spread across the land.

One of the most beautiful truths in this opening scene is not only what God did, but when He was present. Elohim was there before anything changed, before the darkness lifted, and before creation displayed the beauty He intended.

What Does the Name Elohim Mean?

Elohim is the word for God in Genesis 1:1, and it appears more than 2,500 times in the Old Testament. It is related to the Hebrew word El, often associated with strength and might, which also appears in names like El Shaddai, God Almighty (Genesis 17:1). Elsewhere, elohim can refer to angels, rulers, or false gods, but used of the Lord, it sets Him above every so-called god (Psalm 96:5).

The name is also plural in form, yet Genesis 1:1 pairs it with a singular verb. Scripture is clear that God is one (Deuteronomy 6:4), and many Christians have seen in this plural, and in the “us” of Genesis 1:26, an early hint of the triune God revealed more fully in the New Testament. Above all, the name points to power with no rival.

Elohim in Genesis 1: When God Speaks, Creation Answers

Throughout Genesis 1, a quiet refrain carries the story forward: “And God said.” Elohim speaks, and creation responds. There is no struggle against the darkness or doubt about whether His purposes can be accomplished. His Word carries the authority of the Creator, and what He commands comes to be.

Psalm 33 looks back upon this moment with awe: “By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all their host” (Psalm 33:6).

This is the majesty we encounter in Elohim. He is not merely stronger than the powers we know. His strength has no rival, and His creative wisdom surrounds us so completely that we can become familiar with wonders we had no part in making.

Lift Your Eyes and Wonder

There are moments when God’s creation still interrupts us. A sunset stretches color across the sky and stops a conversation. A mountain rising against the horizon reminds us how small we are. Beside the ocean, we watch wave after wave roll toward shore from water that stretches as far as our eyes can see, while on a clear night, the stars seem to continue beyond anything we could count or comprehend.

Scripture tells us not to rush past moments like these. Isaiah says, “Lift up your eyes on high and see: who created these?” (Isaiah 40:26).

That question leads us beyond the beauty we see to the One who made it.

The psalmist says that God “determines the number of the stars” and “gives to all of them their names” (Psalm 147:4).

Beneath a sky like that, we may feel very small. Yet our smallness does not make us insignificant to Him. That is where the wonder becomes even greater.

This Same Elohim Made You

Then the creation story moves toward something astonishing. After filling the earth with life, God says, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness” (Genesis 1:26).

The God who formed the heavens chose to create human beings in His image. The Creator who placed stars across the sky also formed people with unique dignity and purpose. We were created to live under His authority, reflect His character, receive His goodness, and enjoy relationship with the very One who gave us life.

David captures the wonder of this in Psalm 8. Looking into the night sky, he writes, “When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?” (Psalm 8:3–4).

His question still touches something deep within us. When the universe is so vast, and God is so great, why would He care about one person? Why would the One who knows every star hear a whispered prayer, notice hidden grief, or care about a fear no one else sees?

Scripture tells us that He does.

The wonder of Elohim is not simply that He is infinitely greater than we are, but that this infinitely great God is mindful of the people He made. Your deepest identity does not begin with what someone has called you, what you have accomplished, what you possess, or even what you have lost. Your life begins with your Creator. You bear His image, and you were created to know Him.

Yet the beauty of creation also makes the tragedy of sin more painful. Humanity rejected the authority of the God who gave us life, and sin brought shame, fear, suffering, separation, and death into the human story. The people created to enjoy God’s presence began hiding from Him.

But Scripture is not the story of a Creator who looked upon His broken creation and walked away. It is the story of a holy God who extended His hand to sinful people with a plan of redemption.

The Creator Came to Rescue Us

John’s Gospel echoes Genesis: “In the beginning was the Word … All things were made through him” (John 1:1, 3), and that same Word “became flesh and dwelt among us” (John 1:14).

The Creator Himself came near to us in Jesus Christ. Jesus did not enter the world simply to show us God’s power or teach us how to live. He came because sin had separated us from the God who made us, and we could not restore that relationship ourselves.

At the cross, Jesus willingly bore the judgment our sin deserved. He died, was buried, and rose again in victory so that those who repent and place their faith in Him can be forgiven, reconciled to God, and given eternal life.

The God who made us did not leave us in the darkness we had chosen. In Christ, He made a way for us to come home to Him.

Draw Near to Elohim

If you have never trusted Jesus as Savior and Lord, His invitation is not simply to become more religious or try harder to make yourself acceptable to God. It is an invitation to turn from your sin and place your faith in Him, the One who died and rose again for you, and to be forgiven and reconciled to the God who made you.

If you already belong to Christ, perhaps the invitation today is to see your God again with fresh eyes.

The next time you watch the sun rise, stand beneath a night sky, hear the ocean moving, or simply notice your next breath, let that moment draw your heart back to Elohim. The world around you is His handiwork; the God who was there before the light is still near, calling you to Him.

Let wonder draw you toward worship, and let worship deepen your trust in the God who created you, knows you, and, through Jesus Christ, has made a way for you to know Him.

A Prayer

Elohim, You are the Creator of heaven and earth. Open my eyes to Your greatness and help me see the wonder of who You are. Forgive me of my sin and draw me closer to You. I want to accept Christ as my Savior and place You in the center of my life. Help me place my fears, my questions, my future, and my whole life into Your hands. In Jesus’ name, amen.
