Back to Basics

At age 45, Vince Lombardi became an NFL head coach for the first time in 1959, leading the Green Bay Packers, who had only won two games the previous season. Despite their poor record, Lombardi wasn’t discouraged. He saw this as a new season—just as 2025 can be a new beginning for you.

At the team’s first meeting, the players probably wondered how their new coach would turn things around. Lombardi stood silently, holding out a football, and famously said: “Gentlemen, this is a football.” In those few words, Lombardi conveyed his philosophy: The team would start with the basics and master the fundamentals. The Packers had talent, but they needed to focus on these essentials to succeed.

This is a valuable message for us as believers. Our success, like the Packers’, will depend on how well we execute the basics of the Christian life. Lombardi’s focus on fundamentals brought the Packers incredible success, including league championships and Super Bowl victories. A once-hopeless team found new hope, just as we can find new hope in our faith journey by focusing on what truly matters.

No matter how difficult your past seasons have been, a fast turnaround is possible. But, just like the Packers, you must get back to the basics. In the Christian life, that means more than memorizing Bible verses; it’s about letting God’s Word transform you so you can stand in victory and impact others for Jesus. A deep understanding of Scripture and consistent spiritual practices are essential to living a victorious life.

The apostles are a good example. Though “uneducated and untrained,” they rocked the world because they had been with Jesus (Acts 4:13 NASB). On the Day of Pentecost, the disciples received power from on high, reversing their previous failures and transforming them into bold witnesses (Acts 1:8, 2:1-4). The same can happen for you!

The early church also faced distractions, but they renewed their commitment to the essentials. They decided: “We will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word” (Acts 6:4 NKJV). As a result, they experienced a breakthrough, and “the word of God spread, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly” (Acts 6:7 NKJV).

Remember, the world won’t be changed by mere religion or theology, but by believers who’ve encountered the living God. Let’s return to the basics, refocus on prayer, the Word, and spiritual disciplines, and be ready to turn the world upside down for Jesus! A renewed focus on spiritual fundamentals empowers us to bring true transformation to those who need it most.
