The Legacy of a Missionary with an Eternal Vision

Dr. David Livingstone—Scottish medical missionary, explorer, and pioneer of the Gospel—devoted his life to reaching the unreached across Africa. From the remotest regions of modern-day Zambia to territories where Christ had never been preached, he carried one conviction: every person deserves the hope of Jesus Christ. 

For six long years, Livingstone lost all contact with the outside world. In 1869, journalist Henry Morton Stanley was sent to find him. After nearly two years of searching, Stanley discovered Livingstone frail and sick on the shores of Lake Tanganyika—yet still unwavering in his calling.

Stanley urged him to return home for treatment, but Livingstone refused. His mission was not finished. 

A few years later, he died from malaria and dysentery—still on his knees in prayer.

Susi and Chuma, his faithful companions, honored his final request: they buried his heart in Africa. His body and journals were carried more than 1,000 miles so they could be returned to England. His remains rest in Westminster Abbey—but his heart never left Africa.

Jesus said, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21). Livingstone’s heart remained in Africa because that is where he poured out his treasure—his time, his strength, his compassion, and ultimately, his life.
