5 Steps to Victory in Christ

Are you wondering how to live in victory in Christ when life feels anything but victorious? Many believers wrestle with disappointment when the Christian life doesn’t unfold the way they expected—struggles persist, temptations return, and spiritual battles rage on. But here’s the truth: Jesus never promised a life without battle—He promised victory in the battle. Ben Cerullo shares five biblical steps to help you stop living defeated and walk in real spiritual breakthrough through the power of the Holy Spirit.

To live in victory in Christ, quit relying on your own strength, repent of known sin, stay accountable to solid believers, passionately pursue God, and fight the good fight of faith.

The Real Battle Begins After Salvation

I’ve met many believers who become disappointed when things don’t go their way. They’ve fallen prey to a common misconception—that all their problems would vanish the moment they started a relationship with Jesus.

But let’s be honest: Life can be tough. Even as Christians, we’ll face plenty of challenges—including some new ones we didn’t have as unbelievers.

You see, before we were saved, we were no threat to the devil. But when we accepted Jesus into our hearts, something changed. We took up a new residence in the spiritual battlefield and immediately became an enemy of Satan. As Colossians 1:13 says, “He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son.”

You have a new Lord, a new identity, a new purpose—and yes, a new enemy. The devil doesn’t surrender territory without a fight, so he’ll work to discourage and accuse you. But don’t miss this: he may fight you, but he doesn’t own you.

Jesus has already won the victory. First John 3:8 says, “The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.” He didn’t come merely to inspire you—He came to save, deliver, and empower you to walk in victory. So if your struggles feel overwhelming today, these five steps will help you stand in the victory He’s already provided.

1. Quit Relying on Your Own Strength

The first step is humbling: you can’t win spiritual battles in your own strength. That’s where a lot of us get stuck. We try harder, we make promises, we grit our teeth and say, “This time I’ll do better.” But willpower can’t produce spiritual victory.

Zechariah 4:6 says, “Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of hosts.” Victory doesn’t come because you’re strong enough—it comes because Jesus is strong enough. He said it plainly in John 15:5: “Apart from me you can do nothing.”

He didn’t say that to discourage you, but to free you from the exhausting burden of self-effort. You were never meant to overcome sin and fear on your own; you were meant to abide in Him and lean on His power. So come back to the cross—the victory belongs to Christ, and through Him, to you.

2. Cry Out to God and Repent of Known Sin

The second step is to cry out to God and repent of any known sin. I know repentance can sound like a heavy word, but it’s one of the kindest gifts God gives us—the doorway out of bondage and back into fellowship with our Father. It simply means we stop excusing sin, stop hiding it, and by His grace, turn from it.

Listen to the promise in 1 John 1:9: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Notice God doesn’t say He might forgive you—He says He is faithful to. Come to Him honestly through Jesus, and you won’t find a cold judge waiting to condemn you. You’ll find a faithful Father ready to cleanse you.

But you have to be honest. You can’t cling to your chains and ask God for freedom at the same time. And sometimes it isn’t only sin holding you back. Hebrews 12:1 tells us to “lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely.” Some things aren’t sins at all—they’re weights that slow you down and dull your hunger for God.

So turn away from your chains, sin, and bondage, and run into the arms of your loving Father, Savior, and Deliverer. The enemy wants you to hide in shame; Jesus is calling you into the light.

3. Be Accountable to Solid Believers

The third step is accountability. Too many believers are fighting private battles all by themselves, and that’s a dangerous place to be. The enemy loves secrecy, because secrecy gives sin room to grow. God brings freedom through honesty, prayer, and the support of faithful believers.

James 5:16 says, “Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed.” That doesn’t mean you tell everyone everything. It means you need a few mature, trustworthy believers who will pray with you, speak truth to you, and help you keep walking when you feel weak—people who won’t flatter your sin or shame you, but love you enough to tell you the truth.

Ecclesiastes 4:9–10 reminds us, “Two are better than one … For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow.” There will be days when temptation is loud and your strength feels small, and you’ll need someone to lift you up.

So don’t fight alone. Find someone you trust. Ask for prayer. Let a solid believer help you stand. That’s not weakness—that’s wisdom.

4. Passionately Pursue God

The fourth step is to passionately pursue God. Here’s something I don’t want you to miss: victory isn’t just about avoiding sin—it’s about being filled with the presence of God. You weren’t created merely to survive temptation; you were created to know Jesus, love Him, and be changed by Him.

David understood this. In Psalm 63:1 he prayed, “O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you.” That’s the cry of a man who knew God isn’t an accessory to life—He is life.

So you can’t treat time with Him as optional. You need His Word. You need prayer. You need His presence shaping your desires and renewing your mind. Romans 12:2 says, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.”

The world, your past, your flesh, and the enemy are all trying to shape you—but God’s Word teaches you to walk in truth. The more you pursue Jesus, the less power those old chains will have over your heart.

5. Fight the Good Fight

The fifth step is to fight the good fight. Some people hear about grace and assume there’s no fighting left to do, but Scripture says the opposite. Grace doesn’t make us passive—it empowers us to stand.

Ephesians 6:10–11 says, “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God.” Notice where the strength comes from: “in the Lord.” You’re not fighting for victory as if Jesus hasn’t already won it—you’re fighting from the victory He secured when He conquered sin, death, hell, and the grave.

But you still have to stand. You resist the devil, take your thoughts captive, reject the lies, and speak the truth. Paul told Timothy to “fight the good fight of the faith” (1 Timothy 6:12)—and it’s a fight of faith, not fear.

As Romans 8:37 promises, “In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” You don’t belong to defeat. You belong to Jesus. So stand up in faith, walk in the authority of His name, and refuse to go back to the chains He already broke.

The battle is real—but so is the victory.

If you feel trapped or discouraged today, don’t believe the lie that this is the end of your story. Jesus is still your Savior, your Deliverer, and your Victor, and He hasn’t abandoned you in the battle. Walking in victory was never about pretending the fight is easy—it’s about standing on the finished work of Jesus until His freedom becomes your everyday reality.

And you don’t have to walk it alone. At the Spiritual Growth Hub, you’ll find free, Bible-based resources to help you grow stronger in Christ and live in victory every day. Start your journey to lasting spiritual freedom today.
