The Media and Your Mind: Who’s Shaping the Way We Think?

Inspiration MinistriesBy Inspiration Ministries7 Minutes

Media surrounds us more than ever—on our screens, in our pockets, and throughout daily life. Yet few of us stop to consider the media influence on the mind—how what we watch, scroll, and absorb quietly shapes our thoughts, emotions, and values. This article explores why awareness matters and how faith-filled choices can help us decide what truly deserves a place in our minds and our homes.

Long before smartphones, social media feeds, and on-demand entertainment became part of everyday life, a Canadian philosopher and communications scholar was already sounding the alarm.

Marshall McLuhan, author of Understanding Media, understood something many people still overlook today: Media doesn’t just deliver information. It also shapes the way we think, feel, and engage with the world.

Writing in 1964, McLuhan focused largely on television, which at the time was transforming family life, culture, and communication. He observed that children raised with television were “not at all the same,” developing different expectations, perceptions, and responses to life. Adults, too, were affected—drawn into participation, fascination, and emotional involvement, often without realizing how deeply media was influencing them.

His concern wasn’t simply about what people were watching, but how constant exposure was quietly reshaping attention, imagination, and behavior.

From Television to Total Immersion

Today, McLuhan’s insights feel almost prophetic.

Television is no longer the primary influence it once was—but media’s reach has expanded far beyond a single screen in the living room. Phones, social media, streaming platforms, video games, podcasts, and 24/7 connectivity now surround us from morning to night. Media doesn’t just fill our homes; it follows us everywhere.

And much like McLuhan warned, many people remain largely unaware of how deeply it shapes them. Media today:

  • Trains our attention toward speed and stimulation
  • Shapes expectations about relationships, success, and identity
  • Normalizes attitudes, behaviors, and values through repetition
  • Influences emotions before reason has time to engage

McLuhan once wrote that people often “experience far more than they understand,” and that it is experience—not careful reflection—that most strongly influences behavior. That observation may be even more true now than it was 60 years ago.

The Quiet Battle for the Mind

This matters because what captures our attention gradually shapes our thinking, and what shapes our thinking influences our choices, values, and ultimately our lives.

For adults, this can show up as:

  • Chronic distraction or restlessness
  • Anxiety fueled by constant comparison
  • Shortened attention spans and spiritual fatigue
  • Difficulty slowing down to reflect, pray, or listen

For children and teens, the stakes are even higher.

Young minds are still forming their understanding of the world—what is normal, what is desirable, what is true. Media becomes a powerful teacher, often spending far more time with them than parents, churches, or mentors ever will.

This doesn’t mean media is inherently evil. But it does mean it is formative.

Awareness Is Not Fear—It’s Freedom

One of McLuhan’s greatest concerns was that people are often “almost inevitably unaware” of media’s influence. But awareness doesn’t have to lead to fear or withdrawal. Instead, it can lead to intentional, faith-filled choice.

Scripture reminds us that we are not powerless observers of what shapes us. King David prayed with striking clarity:

“I will set no worthless thing before my eyes” (Psalm 101:3).

This wasn’t a call to isolation, but to discernment.

The empowering truth is this: We can decide what we allow to shape our minds—and our children’s minds.

That choice doesn’t require perfection or rigid rules. It begins with attentiveness.

  • What consistently fills our thoughts?
  • Which emotions are being stirred—peace, envy, gratitude, anger, restlessness?
  • What voices are discipling us day after day?

These are not questions of condemnation but of stewardship.

Shaping Minds with Intention

Rather than simply asking, “How much media is too much?” it’s helpful to also ask: “What kind of person is this media shaping me—or my child—to become?”

Faith-filled living doesn’t require rejecting modern tools, but it does call us to anchor our minds in truth. God’s Word invites us to be renewed in how we think, not conformed to whatever happens to be loudest or most engaging in the moment.

For parents, this can look like:

  • Creating spaces for conversation, not just consumption
  • Modeling healthy engagement rather than constant scrolling
  • Choosing content that aligns with the values you hope to pass on

For individuals, it may begin with something simple:

  • Turning down the noise long enough to notice what’s influencing you
  • Making room for Scripture, prayer, and reflection
  • Allowing God—not algorithms—to shape your inner life

Small, consistent choices have a powerful cumulative effect.

Choosing What Shapes Us

Media will continue to evolve. New platforms will emerge. Screens will become more immersive, more personalized, and more persuasive. But the core question remains the same:

Who—or what—is shaping your mind?

God invites us into a different way of living—one rooted in truth, wisdom, and intentional faith. When we choose to fill our hearts and minds with what is good, life-giving, and aligned with His Word, we open ourselves to transformation that no screen can provide.
