Your Personal Commitment

For David, the temple wasn’t just another project. It represented his relationship with God, and the important role that He was to play in the life of His people.

David showed his commitment to this project even though God had said that his son, Solomon, actually would have responsibility. And David continued to do whatever he could to prepare the way and make this temple a reality. He showed his commitment to this project by making a personal contribution.

After collecting materials for the temple, he stood before the people and announced that he was “giving all of my own private treasures of gold and silver to help in the construction.” What was his motivation? His “devotion to the Temple of my God.” His gifts were substantial, including many tons of gold and silver.

Having proven his commitment, he asked others to make their own personal commitment. His question? “Who will follow my example?”

Some people think that commitment just means saying a few words or making a small gesture. But David demonstrated that we show our real commitment to God by what we do with our time and resources. The more we give, the more we reveal what is important to us.

Ask yourself how you can apply this principle in your life. Remember the words of Jesus that “Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be” (Matthew 6:21).

Remember that you demonstrate what is important to you by what you do with your resources.

Don’t compromise or hold back, but show Him that you are serious about your commitment. Be an example that others can follow.
