Your Life Plan

The search for meaning. The quest for direction about a career path. Trying to understand life’s challenges and set the right course. Seeking to determine which choices are right, and wrong. These are subjects of struggle for many college students.

Recently, a professor at a major university described how “countless students” think, “I’m going to figure out who I am, and then make my life plan.” But, as many eventually realize, life doesn’t always unfold in ways they expect. And our vision can be murky at best.

Interacting with students, this professor described how some thought they had figured out their calling or passions. Many had “taken a job offer” only to become unsure it was the right job. Instead of feeling fulfilled, many “ended up feeling anxious, oppressed, and constrained.”

He encouraged students to “break from who you think you are.” To realize how easy it was to limit their future or restrict their growth.

These problems aren’t restricted to recent college graduates. All of us can have questions about direction and meaning. Even mature believers. Dealing with issues like these, one writer in the Bible described this as like “chasing the wind” (Ecclesiastes 1:14). How difficult it can seem to find fulfillment, meaning, and the right answers.

At every stage of life, the Bible encourages us to remember our own limitations, and to seek God for direction. To realize that He understands us better than we understand ourselves.

As you face questions and decisions, remember to seek God in everything, big and small. Apply the principles in His Word. Commit your needs to Him. Seek His wisdom. And make sure that you trust Him. Have confidence that He will direct you and “show you which path to take.”
