Worthy to Suffer

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

Peter and John found joy in being worthy to suffer for Jesus—a bold reminder that following Him may cost us, but never without purpose.

“Calling the apostles in, they flogged them and ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and then released them. So they went on their way … rejoicing that they had been considered worthy to suffer shame for His name.”—Acts 5:40–41 NASB

Peter and John were flogged and threatened. The Sanhedrin used its full force to seek to silence them and keep them from talking about Jesus, praying for people, or sharing the Gospel.

When they left the Sanhedrin, their bodies were bloody, but they were not afraid, intimidated, defeated, or discouraged. The presence of God was so real that they were “rejoicing.” Nothing could keep them from experiencing profound joy in their hearts. Instead of having worry or anxiety, they were overwhelmed by the joy of the Lord.

The specific cause of this rejoicing was “that they had been considered worthy to suffer shame for His name.” Because of their unwavering commitment to Christ, they had been insulted, treated with contempt, abused, and dishonored. This is what filled Peter and John with joy.

How do you react when you experience ridicule or persecution as a follower of Jesus? Do you let the world intimidate you? When threatened, do you back down, or do you stand boldly? When others try to intimidate you, are you paralyzed with fear, or do you allow God to give you faith and confidence, even filling you with joy?

Ask God to make you bold and fearless, like Peter and John, so that nothing can shake you. In every situation, continue to be filled with the Spirit and victorious in His power. No matter what other people say or do, you can continually rejoice in Him.

Reflection Question: How do I respond when my faith brings ridicule or rejection?

Prayer
Heavenly Father, transform my life. Fill me with Your Spirit. Give me a faith strong enough to withstand the attacks of the world. In Jesus’ name, amen.
