Worship and Service

Stories of the rich and famous dominate history – people the world thinks are successful. But the Bible reminds us that God has different standards. He is not interested in what impresses others. As He told Samuel, “Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7). As Jesus said, the meek would inherit the earth (Matthew 5:5).

We see an example of God’s standards in the life of Anna. On the surface, there seemed to be nothing special about her. She was a widow seemingly of no consequences. But, examining her life, God saw something profound and important. What was so special? Her life was filled with prayer and worship. She delighted to serve Him and to be in His presence.

Of all the people in Israel, she was one of the few given the privilege of seeing the baby Jesus at His dedication. This was her reward for a lifetime of focusing on God. Others may have gained attention and achieved prominence. But Anna simply was special to God. She was deserving of the honor He bestowed upon her.

Do you want to be honored by God? Think of the example of Anna. Focus on Him. Delight to be in His presence always. Worship Him with a grateful heart. Seek to be pleasing in His sight. Look toward eternal treasures, not earthly acclaim.
