Elijah’s Battle with Fear

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

Elijah’s battle with fear shows how even after great victory, discouragement can strike—but God restores faith and gives lasting victory.

“Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, ‘So may the gods do to me … if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by this time tomorrow.’ Then he was afraid, and … ran for his life.”—1 Kings 19:2–3

Soon after a glorious victory, Elijah found himself filled with fear and running for his life. Only days earlier, he had stood alone, boldly challenging 450 prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel. Against all odds, he had won, proving there was only one true God.

But his whole countenance changed after he received a threat from Queen Jezebel: He might have defeated the prophets of Baal, but, she warned, he had not defeated her. Shaken to the core, he abruptly stopped trusting in God and became intimidated. He fled and went into hiding—discouraged and demoralized.

All of us, even the most mature believers, can become discouraged, crippled by criticism, wounded by attacks or unkind words, or overwhelmed by problems in health, finances, or family.

Eventually, God spoke to Elijah, and his faith was renewed. He regained his confidence in God and was able to overcome Jezebel’s intimidating words. What a great reminder that God can restore His victory in our lives, too.

Today, you may face a foe or problem like Jezebel. Learn from Elijah’s example. Make sure you are developing a strong, personal relationship with God. When you face problems, don’t run away or give up. If you start to feel worried or afraid, don’t accept defeat. Instead, get alone with God and renew your confidence in Him.

Declare God’s promises to be true in your life. Trust in Him. He is with you in every situation.

Reflection Question: How do you respond when fear threatens to replace your faith?
