Witness to Unlimited Power

Thomas had joined six other disciples to go fishing. In the other times Thomas is mentioned in John’s Gospel, he is seen as an outspoken man who was willing to express his opinions. But here he simply was a fisherman. Like the others, he seems to have become puzzled and frustrated.

Even though these experienced fishermen had fished all night, they caught nothing. The next morning, Jesus appeared on the shore. As they confessed their lack of results, He told them, “Cast the net on the right-hand side of the boat and you will find a catch.” When they obeyed, “they were not able to haul it in because of the great number of fish” (v. 6).

Thomas, who had displayed a propensity to doubt, here shows how Jesus interacts with us in practical ways. This disciple who was reluctant to believe, now was a witness to what happens when people do believe. He saw and experienced for himself how Jesus could change lives and perform miracles for those who don’t doubt, but have faith and obey Him unconditionally.

Thomas learned from his experiences and the questions he asked Jesus. After Jesus answered his doubts and appeared to him in person, he seems to have been a changed man, ready to serve God, fulfill his place among the disciples, and share in the work of the Gospel.

Today, let Jesus speak to you. Let Him open your eyes to new revelations. Have faith, and know that His unlimited power is available for you. Believe, and don’t doubt.
