Why We Give

Inspiration MinistriesBy Inspiration Ministries2 Minutes

Today has been designated as “Giving Tuesday.” This day was created in response to the popularity of such highly commercial “days” as Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The expressed goal was to harness “the power of social media to give back around the world and throughout the year.” It was a day designed to encourage people and businesses to “come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give.”

This raises the question of why people give. As this special campaign suggests, some are motivated by promotions and campaigns.

The Bible suggests a different motive. Giving is to be seen as a central part of our worship to God. It is central to our Christian lives. It is not something to be done once in a while but all the time.

It should be a joy to give. But it also should be a sense of our responsibility as believers and a great opportunity. Giving to God is a recognition that He has blessed us with gifts and resources, and given us the opportunity to invest these gifts in the lives of others. To realize that we have been blessed that we might be a blessing to others.

As we give, we help support God’s work. But we also unleash Biblical principles and open the door to more of His blessings. Jesus taught this principle when He said, “Give, and it will be given to you. They will pour into your lap a good measure—pressed down, shaken together, and running over” (Luke 6:38).

Today, ask God to help you evaluate your motives and priorities. What are you doing with your resources? Make sure that you seek first His Kingdom (Matthew 6:33). As you give to God, trust Him to bless you and provide for your every need.
