What Edifies

“All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful; all things are lawful for me, but not all things edify. Let no one seek his own, but each one the other’s well-being.”1 Corinthians 10:23-24 NKJV

Jesus came to set us free. To free us from sin and burdens. From worries and problems. And, through Christ, God allows us great freedom. In fact, as Paul wrote, from one perspective, “all things are lawful” to us. However, if we really want to serve God faithfully, He wants us to think about our lives in a completely different way.

We need to remember that we are not our own but “have been bought with a price” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). We are ambassadors for Christ (2 Corinthians 5:20), His representatives to the world. As Christians, we need to be conscious of how our actions impact others and what furthers His Kingdom. We also need to think about what is best in the long run, not just what we are allowed to do.

Paul wrote that God may permit us to do certain things, but wants us to realize that many “lawful” things may not be helpful. At the same time, if we focus on our personal freedoms, we might do things that we can justify or rationalize, but which may not edify.

We need to realize that God always wants the best for us. He knows that some actions will make us more like Christ. Some may produce more spiritual fruit. Some may help us serve Him and further His Kingdom.

Today, when you think about your choices, be thankful for the freedoms God gives you. But also remember how important it is to seek the well-being of others, and do what is helpful and edifying. Commit everything you do to Him. Let Him free you from burdens and cares, and give you the joy of being His servant.

Prayer: Father, thank You for the freedom I have in Christ. But I surrender my life to You. I am Your servant. Help me to be faithful to Your call, and to please You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
