Weapons with Real Impact

They were controversial. Ridiculed by many. Thought to be a waste of time and money by others. There were technical problems and the entire concept was considered a failure by some experts.

These were the first tanks. The idea had been introduced in the fifteenth century by Leonardo da Vinci. But the actual first prototype was produced in September 1915 by the British, partly as a byproduct of the trench warfare of World War I. Winston Churchill was an early advocate of these “land boats.”

Many early models were disasters. But, finally, on this day, one hundred years ago, the first tank actually was used in battle, primarily to clear away barbed wire along the trenches. Some continued to scoff, but others recognized their potential. Many improvements were made, and, ultimately, tanks had a revolutionary impact on warfare.

History reveals the countless types of weapons used in wars, and the endless efforts to achieve better results. Yet, in the spiritual realm, God already has given us the most effective tool: fighting in the Spirit. When applied in the right way, these spiritual weapons provide “divine power to destroy strongholds.”

But what is surprising is how infrequently many apply these weapons. In fact, some forget that we are in a spiritual war at all. Some find it too difficult to fight back and, effectively, concede defeat.

Some resort to all kinds of strategies, some more effective than others. Some don’t know what to do.

All the while, the Bible reminds us of the weapons that have the most impact. Standing on truth. With a “breastplate of righteousness.” Committed to the “the gospel of peace.” Protected by “the shield of faith.” Confident in our salvation, wielding the “the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” And “praying at all times in the Spirit” (Ephesians 6:13-18).
