Value

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

When we understand the true meaning of value, we realize that Jesus faced rejection not from strangers, but from those who failed to see His worth.

“After the two days, He departed from there for Galilee. For Jesus Himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country.”—John 4:43–44 NASB

During His ministry, Jesus was often criticized and rejected by the people who should have known Him best—the people “in his own country.” But there, a prophet could have no “honor.”

The word honor may turn our thoughts toward respect and admiration, but Jesus actually meant something a little different; the Greek word used here stresses value or worth.

Jesus was saying that people in a prophet’s own country don’t really value them or their words. Why? The people in Jesus’ own home country had seen Him grow up. They simply couldn’t get past this familiarity. For them, He wasn’t what they imagined the Messiah or a prophet would be like. He didn’t match their expectations, nor did He look like a celebrity, politician, or military hero.

If you seek to serve God, you too, can expect a variety of reactions. Some may have a hard time receiving the message God has given you. You shouldn’t be surprised if you face doubt or intense scrutiny at times. Some may question your motives or be skeptical about your testimony. They may look at you with jealousy or a spirit of competitiveness.

If this happens, just think about the example of Jesus. He didn’t allow the comments of others to keep Him from His focus on fulfilling His ministry.

Dedicate yourself to serving God and completing the assignments He has given you.

Reflection Question: Whose opinion has too much influence over your sense of worth?
