Valid Evidence

To Carl Friedrich Gauss, it was not enough merely to apply mathematics. Resurrecting an attitude introduced by the ancient Greeks, this German prodigy (born in 1777) believed it was important for results to be tested and proven. In fact, his insistence on “rigor” changed the course of mathematics.

This “rigor” meant being precise and careful. Solutions had to pass every conceivable test. Statements must be proven, not just taken for granted.

Jesus, likewise, demonstrated that it was important to prove the validity of our faith. He provided “many convincing proofs” to demonstrate that He was the Son of God and that He had risen from the dead.

We see this when John the Baptist sent disciples to ask Jesus questions. Indicating that there were doubts, they asked, “Are You the Expected One, or shall we look for someone else?” Jesus responded by pointing to the evidence of His ministry: “Go and report to John what you hear and see.”

The inquirers could see the results for themselves. Blind eyes were opened. The lame could walk. Lepers were being cleansed. The deaf could hear. The dead were raised. And the Gospel was being preached to the poor (Matthew 11:1-5).

Jesus said His followers, too, were to prove the Gospel by letting their light shine so others “may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).

After His Resurrection, Jesus responded to Thomas’ doubt by appearing to him, and proving that He was alive (John 20:24-29). This was one of His “convincing proofs.”

Today, the world still looks for valid evidence for the claims of Christ. People still are looking for demonstrations that the Gospel is relevant and Jesus truly changes lives. Seek to live in such a way that others see Jesus in you. Let your life provide the proof.
