Unexpected Messenger

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

In the story of an unexpected messenger, Jeremiah reminds us that God often speaks through surprising voices and situations if we’re willing to listen.

“A noise will come to the ends of the earth—for the LORD has a controversy with the nations. He will plead His case with all flesh … a great whirlwind shall be raised up from the farthest parts of the earth.”Jeremiah 25:31–32 NKJV

Look for “a great whirlwind” from “the farthest parts of the earth.” God cautioned that the people needed to be ready—He would speak from unexpected places, using unexpected messengers.

The Lord was trying to get their attention by sending warnings and judgment. He often deals with individuals in similar ways. Yes, He speaks to us through His Word, the leading of His Spirit, pastors, prophets, family members, and close friends—but He often surprises us by speaking in other ways.

God may send us messages from the least likely places, at the most unlikely times. He can use strangers or friends, government or business, weather or the media, and anything or anyone else. He can even use world events to get our attention.

Are you sensitive to the work of God’s Spirit in your life? Be open to the ways in which He might speak to you. Be alert, and don’t miss His messages.

Spend time alone with God. Let His Word penetrate deep within your heart and mind. When He wants to speak to you, He may give you a sense of disquiet, a burden, inspiration, insight, or warning.

Don’t be surprised if He speaks to you in unlikely and unexpected ways. Get away from worldly distractions, and seek His face. Pray. Fast. Listen.

Reflection Question: Are you paying attention when God speaks in unexpected ways?

Prayer
