Unconquerable Kingdom

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

Earthly kingdoms rise and fall, but God’s unconquerable Kingdom lasts forever. Seek Him above all else.

“Do not let Hezekiah deceive you … and do not let Hezekiah lead you to trust in the Lord by saying, ‘The LORD will certainly save us, and this city will not be handed over to the king of Assyria.’”—2 Kings 18:29–30 NASB

Many believe that Alexander the Great was the greatest military leader in history. In just a few years from 336–323 BC, he conquered an empire stretching from Greece to India. He employed radical new strategies and inspired his troops to overcome overwhelming obstacles.

Yet soon after he died, his kingdom broke apart. Authors Justine Pollard and Howard Reid point out how quickly his “dreams lay in ruins, his mother, wife, half-brother, and infant son all murdered.”

The apocryphal book of 1 Maccabees describes how Alexander’s “officers … all put on crowns after his death … and they caused many evils on the earth.”

Many men throughout history have been driven to seek this kind of dominance in business or politics, entertainment or sports. Yet they all forget how quickly conditions can change and their empires can end.

The Bible describes how Sennacherib, king of Assyria, was driven by motives similar to Alexander’s, conquering and seizing lands to expand his kingdom. He was confident and willing to openly defy God. But, like Alexander, Sennacherib learned he was just a man. All it took was one angel to destroy his army and kill 185,000 of his soldiers! Then, when he returned to Assyria, Sennacherib was assassinated (2 Kings 18–19).

Today, make sure that you have the right priorities. Seek the Kingdom that will last forever, the Kingdom of God. Commit your life to serving Him.

Relfection Question: What areas of your life need a greater focus on God’s eternal kingdom?

Prayer
