Can unbelief actually limit what you experience of God? In His own hometown, Jesus did few miracles—because of their unbelief.

“He did not do many mighty works there, because of their unbelief” (Matthew 13:58).

In 1867, a group of ministers, writers, educators, and others began meeting in the home of Reverend John T. Sargent in Boston. “The Radical Club” came from all denominations, and they made many contributions to society.

But an analysis by scholar Gay Wilson Allen noted that the group also was “formed to discuss the abolishing of all vestiges of supernaturalism.” They wanted to redirect religion toward focus on moral actions, emphasizing teachings such as the Sermon on the Mount, while de-emphasizing miracles and God’s power.

In many ways, they were like the people in Jesus’ hometown, Nazareth. Elsewhere, people flocked to see Jesus. They were healed and delivered, and many miracles took place. Yet He could do only a few miracles in Nazareth, “because of their unbelief.”

Now, many people share these attitudes and embrace this kind of religion. They stress interpersonal relationships, economic and social issues, harmony and tolerance among humankind. But they are uncomfortable with anything about God’s power. They don’t believe in miracles. Like the members of The Radical Club, some even want to eliminate the mention of the supernatural from the Christian faith.
