The True King of Kings

The Parthians emerged as a powerful force in the third century BC. From their homeland (just north of modern Iran), they gradually expanded their territory, gaining leverage as gatekeepers for the critical Silk Highway that linked the West with China.

As they grew in power and influence, they were mysterious to the Romans. The first official meeting between Parthians and Romans took place on the Euphrates River in 92 BC. Rome was represented by Sulla, who would later become Rome’s dictator.

During the conference, he made a critical error: Sulla did not call Parthia’s leader by his correct title. For the Parthians, their leader was the “king of kings.”

During the next few decades, the Parthians became a greater threat to Rome, even gaining control of Judea and Jerusalem for a time. Throughout the entire New Testament era, they remained a global superpower.

How interesting to look back at this important people group, who often are forgotten today. How fascinating that they insisted their leader was not just a king like other rulers, but “king of kings.” Yet, like every human leader, all their kings died and are largely forgotten. Like all empires, their kingdom ultimately faded away.

Looking back, we can see how God rules in every generation. And we know that, one day, every knee will bow to Jesus (Philippians 2:10). We can look into eternity and realize that Jesus alone is “King of Kings, and Lord of Lords.”

In our time, nations may fight for prestige. Kings and entertainers may be driven by pride and ego to win the support of adoring fans. Politicians may clamor for office and control. Athletes compete to be the “best.”

But there still is only one real King of Kings—Jesus! Make sure that you worship Him, and Him alone!
