Trimming the Lamp

Inspiration MinistriesBy Inspiration Ministries2 Minutes

Aaron was responsible to take care of the lamps that were before God’s presence. He was to trim them daily, not just once but twice. Every morning and at twilight. Why? Because God wanted the lamp to burn constantly and effectively, as brightly as possible. Every evening, Aaron also was to burn incense, a sweet-smelling offering to God.

These were not random assignments, but central to Aaron’s ministry. And they are important to us, demonstrating critical spiritual principles.

Trimming the lamps is a symbol about making priorities for our Christian lives. Jesus said, “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).

If we want our light to shine brightly, we need to “trim our lamps.” This means spending time with God every day. It means reading His Word and waiting on Him. This means making prayer central to our lives, and constantly being sensitive to the conviction, warning, and direction of His Spirit.

This daily focus on God is essential if we want our “light” to shine brightly. We can’t do this once in a while. We must do this every day.

We also are to present offerings of praise. We are to be living sacrifices, holy and acceptable to God (Romans 12:1). This means serving Him in practical ways. Making Godly decisions and choices. Being faithful with our resources. Standing on the principles in His Word.

Today, do not ignore your “lamp,” but seek to make it burn brightly. Spend quality time with God. Make serving Him your highest priority, and offer sacrifices of praise, pleasing Him with your life.
