Missing the Mark

Ever feel like you’ve fallen short of who you were meant to be? Scripture has a word for that—and in Romans 3, grace answers it.

“All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus” (Romans 3:23–24).

Michele Frangilli of Italy once held the Olympic record in archery, set in the qualifying round of the 1996 Olympics. His score of 684 was considered a remarkable achievement, yet it fell short of a perfect score (720). In other words, the then-best archer in Olympic history fell short of hitting the mark every time.

His failure to achieve perfection reminds us that it’s impossible for any of us to live perfect lives. All of us “have sinned and fall short.” Paul used a Greek word that means to miss the mark. Yes, all of us make mistakes—even the very “best” person.

But even though we sin, God has provided a way for us to be forgiven and free. How? We can trust in Jesus Christ to take away our sins.

For many people, failure can be a crushing experience. It can discourage us and cause us to feel defeated. But God still loves us even when we miss the mark. In His sight, failure doesn’t disqualify us from serving Him. Instead, it should lead us to realize that He sent Jesus to take the punishment for our sins. And it should humble us and drive us to seek Him more.

These truths apply to everyone, even you! Remember that you are not perfect. You will make mistakes. And when you do, confess your sins to God. Accept His forgiveness. Then, rejoice! You are clean in His sight!
