The Word in Action

For a quiet man, John Calvin stirred up intense reactions. When he had a personal conversion experience with God, he could not stay silent, in spite of the risks. He remained in Paris as long as he could, studying law and writing. Eventually, he had to flee for his life.

Possessing an iron will, he became a resolute believer in and student of God’s Word. He studied diligently, asking God for insights. He wrote commentary after commentary.

Many of his sermons were developed from these studies. Over a period of a few years, he preached 189 sermons on Acts, 173 on Ezekiel, and 200 on Deuteronomy. He challenged Christians to study the Word more for themselves.

Through his commitment and example, he inspired generations of believers to a more serious faith based solely on the Word. He called believers to learn and to live the Word. This commitment led to the formation of countless educational institutions. Author David Holmes has pointed out, “As of 1770, two-thirds of the institutions of higher education in the American colonies were of Calvinist origins.”

The world needs Christians with this same commitment who believe in the Word! Christians need to be ready to unleash its full power! Make sure that you are committed to the Word. Put the Word into action and never compromise. Don’t be silent about your beliefs. Stand up! Be bold for Jesus!
