The Power of Words

The Power of Words

Arriving on the eastern shore of the Sea of Galilee, Jesus was met by two demon-possessed men. They were violent, instilling fear throughout the region. But Jesus never backed down or hesitated. And the men, and demons within them, knew He was different!

When they sensed He was going to do something, the demons asked Jesus to send them “into the herd of swine” (v. 31). He did not need any extreme preparation or make a long speech. In fact, He spoke only one word: “Go!” One word is all it took…and the demons were gone!

The Bible tells us that each of us has that same kind of power! Just think! Our words, too, have power. In fact, “death and life are in the power of the tongue” (Proverbs 18:21). At the same time, we also can water down our words and make them less effective.

If we want to speak with power and authority, we need to be prepared. Spiritually strong. Filled with the Spirit. In tune with God. Living according to God’s Word.

Today, remember that God has given you great power, and your words have power. But that power can be blocked by doubt and sin.

Make sure that you are ready to speak words of power and impact. Fill your life with God’s Word. Confess His promises. Purge your life of sin and anything that separates you from Him. Spend time alone with Him. Surrender to the Spirit. Walk by faith, confident in God’s presence in you.
