The One Thing

If God asked us what one thing was most important to us, what would we answer? In this Psalm, David said there was only one thing that he asked from God: “That I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD and to meditate in His temple.”

God’s presence was so wonderful that David desired this more than anything else. He knew that everything changed when he was in the Lord’s presence. There he received peace and wisdom. In His presence was “fullness of joy; in Your right hand there are pleasures forever” (Psalm 16:11).

David also felt protected in God’s presence. In times of trouble, he knew how easy it was to be tempted to escape to a distant fortress, or to rely on armies, alliances, or other earthly powers. But David knew that being with God is the safest place to be. The Lord promises to conceal us, hide us, and even lift us “up on a rock.”

Think about these truths as they apply in your life. What are your priorities? What is the focus of your time and energy? What is the one thing you really seek in life?

As you ponder these things, don’t seek the things of this world, but set your heart to seek God. Listen to His voice. Read His words. Worship Him, and spend time in prayer.

In the Lord’s presence, you will gain peace and assurance, constantly feeling His protecting hand. He will give you fullness of joy and pleasures forever!
