The King Eternal

God is the King eternal. As in the Great Awakening, true revival begins when hearts hunger for Him.

“Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.”—1 Timothy 1:17 NASB

Jonathan Edwards was filled with questions. His father was a pastor, yet Jonathan, born in 1703, was compelled to understand truth for himself. As a student at Yale University, he sought the answers he needed in his own heart and mind. Finally, as he studied 1 Timothy, he had a revelation and gained “a new sense of things.” God alone is King, “eternal, immortal, invisible.”

Armed with this revelation, Jonathan entered the ministry. His heart burned with concern for his church and for lives filled with sin. After he preached a series of sermons, a revival broke out in December 1734 in Northampton, MA. People turned to the Lord, and revival spread from community to community.

Whole families and entire towns were changed. There was such a hunger for God that businesses were closed, and churches were packed with people eager to hear from God. The Great Awakening had begun, a powerful revival that transformed the colonies.

Is it possible that another Great Awakening could take place in our time? God is the same. But are there people truly sold out for the Lord, eager to grow in their faith, hungry for truth, and devoted to bringing God glory?

Today, ask God to give you this kind of hunger. Seek His face. Devour His Word. Pray for a move of His Spirit so that people will repent, turn from their sins, and worship “the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God.”
