The Joy of Giving Freely

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

When we live out the joy of giving freely, we show God our love, trust, and devotion, placing His Kingdom above our own interests.

“Since I know, my God, that You put the heart to the test and delight in uprightness, I … have willingly offered all these things; so now with joy I have seen Your people … make their offerings willingly to You.”—1 Chronicles 29:17 NASB

David conceived the idea of building a temple for God. Though his son Solomon was given responsibility for the actual construction, David made sure everything was ready for this incredible task.

As he approached the end of his life, David realized that his vision would become a reality. In gratitude, he led the people in worship and praise. He blessed God, acknowledging that His “is the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, and the majesty,” and everything comes from Him (vs. 11–12).

One thing brought David particular joy: seeing how the people willingly gave their offerings to God, joyously worshipping Him with their gifts. This spirit of joy continued as everyone blessed the Lord. As a result, “they ate and drank that day before the Lord with great gladness” (v. 22).

As the Israelites’ generous giving brought joy to David’s heart, so God is pleased when we give to Him wholeheartedly. This shows that we genuinely love Him and that His Kingdom is more important to us than our personal interests and pleasures. It demonstrates our realization that we owe everything to Him. It is powerful evidence that we trust Him with our lives, possessions, and gifts.

Today, God is ready to pour out His joy and blessings on those who give willingly. Commit your life and all that you have to Him. Give willingly and bring joy to His heart!

Reflection Question: How can your giving reflect joy and trust in God today?
