The Ears of the Heart

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

In The Ears of the Heart, Jeremiah’s story shows that when the world grows loud, the soul that pauses to listen finds God’s voice cutting through the noise.

“I persistently sent to you … the prophets … But they did not listen or incline their ear. […] ‘As for the word that you have spoken to us in the name of the LORD, we will not listen to you!’”—Jeremiah 44:4–5, 16

Jeremiah was sensitive to God’s voice. He listened to God and spent time alone with Him. Because he listened, the Lord spoke to him and gave him wisdom and insight, help and direction. Listening helped Jeremiah recognize deception and know right from wrong. He was able to discern the signs of the times and be prepared to respond to danger and temptation.

Because he was a listener, Jeremiah learned to recognize the difference between his own emotions and the leading of God’s Spirit, between his own thoughts and the words of God. He also was able to resist the pressure to conform to the ways of the world.

In many ways, the entire book of Jeremiah is about listening; the Hebrew word for listen is used at least 165 times. God constantly tried to warn and correct His people, but, again and again, they refused to listen. And they paid a high price for not listening.

These principles are still true today. God looks for people who are listeners. Don’t let the noise and clutter of the world squeeze God out of your schedule. Spend quality time with Him. Be filled with His Word. Seek His wisdom and direction.

Share your burdens and concerns, needs and problems with Him—but don’t forget to listen to His voice. He is ready to teach you powerful truths and insights. Let Him speak to you—He has much to say.

Reflection Question: How can you quiet life’s noise to hear God’s voice?
