The Day God Has Made

“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; for His lovingkindness is everlasting. . .It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man. . .The Lord is my strength and song. . .The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief corner stone. This is the Lord’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day which the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalm 118:1-24 NASB

This psalm has had a special place for God’s people. This is the last of the “Passover Psalms,” read or sung by many to help celebrate this central feast of the Lord. It is thought that this may have been one of the psalms read or sung by Jesus and His disciples on the night before His death.

It also was called a “praise” psalm. For this psalm called on God’s people to fill their lives with praise. Throughout their history, they had had many reasons to be afraid or worried. But this psalm reminds them that they can be confident in Him, as He proved when He delivered them in the exodus and other times throughout history.

This psalm also points prophetically to the coming Messiah. For He was “the stone which the builders rejected [who] has become the chief corner stone.” Indeed, Jesus was the complete fulfillment of the Passover celebration, the Lamb who was slain.

As is so frequent in these Passover Psalms, we are reminded to praise God. Not to trust in other people, but place all our confidence in Him.

It is a reminder that God will achieve His purposes. That His plans will be accomplished. We, His people, can celebrate, today and every day. For this is the day He has made. No matter what is going on in our lives or the world, we can rejoice in Him.

Prayer: Father, thank You for sending Jesus into this world to die for my sins. Thank You for saving me. Thank You that I can be filled with joy because of Jesus! In His name. Amen.
