Who Is This Man?

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

Who is this man who can calm a storm with just a word? Jesus! He longs to calm your storms, too.

“A fierce gale of wind developed, and the waves were breaking over the boat […] And He got up and rebuked the wind […] ‘Who, then, is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?’”—Mark 4:37–41 NASB

The fierce storm shook seasoned fishermen to the core. It seemed different—more violent, more intense—and they felt completely helpless. Even though Jesus had called them on this journey, He remained asleep while they struggled for their lives. In desperation, they woke Him, crying, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” (v. 38)

Jesus then demonstrated why He was so calm. He rebuked the wind and told the sea, “Hush, be still” (v. 39). Suddenly, there was perfect calm, tranquility, and peace. This display of authority overwhelmed the disciples, but Jesus simply asked, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?” (v. 40)

Amazed, they said to each other, “Who, then, is this?” He could calm any storm, no matter how violent; heal any disease, no matter how deadly; and solve any problem, no matter how complex.

This same Jesus is our Lord and Master, and He is with us as we go through our personal crises and times of turbulence. He is with us, and He never worries. Jesus can simply speak a word and bring complete restoration, healing, and peace. He can provide for our needs no matter how life may be shaking all around us.

Put your faith in Jesus. When you go through storms, have confidence that He is with you and will bring you safely home. Do not be afraid, but rather trust in Him.

Reflection Question: What storms do you need Jesus to calm in this season?
