Satisfying Hope

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

Satisfying hope comes from hoping in God, even when times are tough.

“Tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.”—Romans 5:3–5 NASB

Paul wrote his letter to the Romans during the reign of Rome’s fifth emperor, Nero Augustus Germanicus, who was born in 37 AD.

Soon after becoming emperor in 54 AD, Nero struggled with his mother for power and eventually had her killed. Gradually, he became more egocentric. Historian Michael Grant writes how Nero was driving a team of horses at the Olympic games when he was “hurled out of his chariot.” Nonetheless, he was awarded first prize, and the judges were rewarded handsomely.

In 64 AD, a fire burned much of Rome. According to the historian Tacitus, rumors began spreading that Nero had started the fire. To deflect this accusation, Nero blamed Christians. As a result, many believers were martyred, tortured by dogs, “nailed to crosses, or were doomed to the flames and burnt, to serve as a nightly illumination.”

Paul wrote to these Romans, “Tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint.” Paul wanted the Romans to know that, even through tough times, we learn more of the love of God, and the work of the Holy Spirit.

You may be going through difficulties or times of tribulation. But today, no matter what you are going through, you can find hope in God. Through all circumstances, He is perfecting and training you, giving you perseverance and proven character. If you hope in Him, you will not be disappointed.
