The Danger of Seeking Lesser Gods

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

Second Kings 1 confronts the folly of misplaced trust and the danger of seeking lesser gods, reminding us that the One True God alone holds power over life and death and calls His people to seek Him rather than empty substitutes.

“Ahaziah fell through the lattice in his upper chamber in Samaria, and lay sick; so he sent messengers, telling them, ‘Go, inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron, whether I shall recover from this sickness’” (2 Kings 1:1–2).

Following the example of his parents, Ahab and Jezebel, Ahaziah embraced idolatry. This was evident when he became ill. Instead of seeking God, he sought help from a false god.

But God sent Elijah to intercept Ahaziah’s messengers, telling them to ask the king, “Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron?” (v. 3). God warned that Ahaziah would die from his illness.

When the messengers returned with this report, Ahaziah sent 50 soldiers to seek Elijah. But when they found him, Elijah merely spoke a word, and fire consumed the soldiers. Learning nothing, Ahaziah sent more soldiers, but they, too, were consumed by fire.

Undaunted, Ahaziah sent even more soldiers, but their captain was different. He humbled himself before Elijah and begged him to spare his life and the lives of his soldiers. At the command of the angel of the Lord, Elijah went with this captain and repeated the original message.

How many people are like Ahaziah, determined to reject Christianity and ignore God, but willing to follow false religions or deceitful ideas. For a season, such people might seem to succeed, but God always triumphs.

Don’t be seduced by the clever words of the world or tempted by false doctrines. Obey God. Remember, “There is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 2:5).

Reflection Question: When am I tempted to seek help apart from the Lord?

Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, You alone are God. There is none like You. I submit my life to You. I worship and praise You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
