Bitterness and Envy

Daily Devotional3 Minutes

What happens when envy takes root? The rivalry between Rachel and Leah shows how quickly bitterness can poison a relationship—and why we must guard against it.

“When Rachel saw that she bore Jacob no children, she envied her sister. She said to Jacob, ‘Give me children, or I shall die!’” (Genesis 30:1).

Rachel and her sister, Leah, both were married to the same man, Jacob. Both sought to find fulfillment through the birth of children, and in the process, they developed a kind of competition, rivaling for the affection of their common husband.

Rachel clearly was the love of Jacob’s life, but Leah was initially the only one able to bear his offspring. As a result, the Bible says simply that Rachel “envied her sister.” So intense was her feeling that she complained to Jacob, “Give me children, or I shall die!”

In her determination, Rachel told Jacob to sleep with her maid, Bilhah. When a son was born, Rachel thought of the boy as hers and felt vindicated. But this birth only served to fuel the rivalry between the two sisters.

We shouldn’t be surprised that this contest continued to escalate. The Bible warns about the impact of motivations like bitterness and envy. In the New Testament, James warns that envy is evidence of false wisdom, “not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice” (James 3:14–16). How easily these things can dominate our lives!

Don’t allow bitterness or envy to poison your life. Make sure that you submit every situation to God—every relationship, problem, success, and failure. Trust in Him. Seek His wisdom and let Him transform your life.

Reflection Question: Are you motivated by bitterness and envy—or peace and wisdom?
