The Apple of God’s Eye

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

Israel remains the apple of God’s eye, a people deeply cherished and protected by the Lord—reminding us that His covenant love never wavers.

“For the LORD of armies says this: ‘After glory He has sent me against the nations that plunder you, for the one who touches you, touches the apple of His eye.’”—Zechariah 2:8 NASB

“The apple of my eye” expresses particular affection. God used this phrase to describe just how special His people were to Him, “for the LORD’S portion is His people.” They were “His inheritance. He found [Jacob] in a desert land and … guarded him as the apple of His eye” (Deuteronomy 32:9–10).

Hundreds of years later, God still felt this intense affection for His people. They had often disappointed, disobeyed, and rejected Him. Although their unfaithfulness had forced Him to send judgment at times, they remained the “apple of His eye.”

God warned other people and nations that they should respect this special relationship He had with His people. They are precious to Him.

Does this mean Israel could do whatever they wanted? No. The Bible tells us that “whom the Lord loves He disciplines, just as a father disciplines the son in whom he delights” (Proverbs 3:12). Because He loves Israel, He will reprove and even judge them. But God also warns that special judgment comes to those who mistreat His people.

We need to remember just how precious Israel is to God. He promises to watch out for His people and take strong action toward individuals or nations who oppose them.

Pray for Israel, and take whatever steps you can to show your compassion and concern. They still are the “apple of His eye.” He promises blessings to those who bless them.

Reflection Question: How can you actively show compassion for what matters to God’s heart?

Prayer
Lord, thank You for Your faithfulness to bless Your people. Give me a greater love for Israel. Help me to be a blessing. In Jesus’ name, amen.
