Saul arrived in Gibeah shortly after David had left. Saul challenged the men of the town to reveal David’s plans. But no one would talk. Finally, Doeg (Saul’s chief shepherd) spoke up. Seizing the moment, he recognized that this was a golden opportunity to advance his career. He reported that David had come to Ahimelech the priest who inquired of the Lord for David. And Ahimelech gave him provisions and a weapon.

It all seemed justifiable and innocent. But to Saul, these actions were treasonous. He declared that Ahimelech and his household were to be executed. When no one else would carry out the sentence, Saul turned to Doeg, who killed dozens of priests and their family members.

Overwhelmed by the slaughter, David expressed his emotions by writing this psalm. Doeg may have appeared to make the right career move, but David knew God would bring justice. Doeg would be known as “the man who would not make God his refuge, but trusted in the abundance of his riches and was strong in his evil desire” (v. 7).

Doeg might have advanced his career but God knew he was a “worker of deceit.” That he loved “evil more than good, falsehood more than speaking what is right.” He would be judged.

If you ever are tempted to compromise your convictions, remember Doeg. God is watching. Keep doing the right thing. He will reward you for being faithful.
