Spiritual and Practical

Confined to a prison cell, Paul demonstrated that his life truly had been transformed. Instead of being afraid or worried, he and Silas were praying and singing hymns of praise so loudly that they were heard by the other prisoners.

When the area was shaken by “a great earthquake,” cell doors were opened and chains were unfastened. But neither they nor the other prisoners escaped. In just a short time, Paul and Silas had demonstrated a faith that was contagious. And Paul was able to lead the jailer and his family to salvation.

But Paul also could be practical. In the morning, he and Silas were told they were to be released. On the surface, we might have expected them to accept the release and move on. However, Paul had another perspective. His actions demonstrated another aspect of faith.

The story of Paul’s life reveals that he was a good organizer, understanding political realities and his legal rights. When he came to Philippi, he knew this was the first time the Gospel had been brought to Europe. He was concerned with how his actions would impact the spread of the Gospel. He also was acting as God’s representative, serving under His authority.

By demanding a public apology and standing up to these politicians, he put them on the defensive. Paul emerged in the dominant position and left prison on his terms.

In your life, seek to be sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit. Always remember Jesus’ words, to be “wise as serpents but innocent as doves” (Matthew 10:16). Be rooted in God’s Word, and seek first His Kingdom. Be bold, standing strongly for Him.
