Complacent

Can you know all the right things about God and still drift? Zephaniah warns against complacency—a faith alive in words but stalled in action.

“I will search Jerusalem with lamps, and I will punish the men who are complacent, those who say in their hearts, ‘The Lord will not do good, nor will he do ill’” (Zephaniah 1:12).

Some people have an active faith. They don’t just know about God, but they actually have a personal relationship with Him. They don’t just know what His Word says, but they’ve hidden it in their hearts, and it’s part of the fabric of their being. Their lives have been transformed by the Holy Spirit, and they are new creatures in Christ. They have powerful prayer lives and seek first God’s Kingdom.

But others, as Zephaniah describes, are “complacent”—though they have all the ingredients necessary to believe and live in victory and they know what to do, they don’t do it. They’re concerned about their reputation and about what others might say. And instead of putting their faith into action, they’re spiritually motionless—standing still.

These stagnant people are like the seed in Jesus’ parable that was “sown among thorns.” They “hear the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it proves unfruitful” (Mark 4:18–19). Instead of being governed by God’s Word, they’ve placed their faith in the things of the world.

The reality is that anyone can allow their faith to stagnate. How do we prevent this from happening? By maintaining a living relationship with God. We must know Him personally and intimately, dare to believe His Word, and trust Him completely. Put your faith into action!
