Sensitive to God’s Timing

In September 1066, the descendants of Viking settlers waited restlessly, poised on the coast of France. Their leader, William I, had claimed the English throne and decided to assault England in order to gain the title by force.

These people, known to us as the “Normans,” did not realize they had chosen a perfect time to act. England’s army (which earlier had been disbanded for the harvest) had just been recalled to defend against Vikings who had attacked from Norway. The English defeated these Norwegians, but they now were exhausted as a result.

When William’s men attacked, they faced weary English forces. If he had waited longer, the weather would have worsened, and the English army would have been revived. Had the battle taken place sooner, the English would have had a numerical advantage. But, because they acted at the right time, the Normans conquered England.

This “conquest” was a turning point in history and an outstanding example of good timing. Timing is important in military matters, but also in government and business, agriculture and cooking. Timing also is important for Christians.

We see this in the life of Jesus. John the Baptist prepared His way when the time was fulfilled (Mark 1:15). Jesus was born and lived “in the fullness of time” (Galatians 4:4). He always demonstrated sensitivity to God’s timing. There were moments when people unsuccessfully tried to seize Him, but, when “His hour” finally came, He was prepared to be taken away.

In our lives, we must learn that God not only prepares us, but He also prepares the environment, resources, and conditions for each action. He wants us to be sensitive to act at the right time.

Today, ask God to help you be more sensitive to His timing. Remember: “He has made everything beautiful in its time” (Ecclesiastes 3:11 NIV).
