Sealed by the Spirit

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

“You were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.”—Ephesians 1:13–14

When Paul began his three years in Ephesus, the first issue he dealt with was the Holy Spirit: “Finding some disciples he said to them, ‘Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?’” (Acts 19:1–2).

He taught them the difference between John’s baptism and being “baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.” After he laid hands on them, “the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied” (Acts 19:5–6).

Paul wanted them not just to know about the Holy Spirit but also to learn to draw on the presence of the Spirit in their lives. To understand the role of the Spirit, Paul mentioned the Spirit 11 separate times in his letter to the Ephesians.

Among the insights Paul taught, he wanted believers to realize they “were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise.” The Spirit seals us in the same way a stone seals a tomb. This means that we are secure and safe, hidden and protected. Further, the Holy Spirit is “the guarantee of our inheritance.”

Remember that the Spirit is with you to guide you, give you wisdom, warn you of danger, and provide the power you need. Do not trust in your own strength but be filled with His Spirit. Call on Him. Listen for His voice. Become sensitive to His presence. You can depend on Him. He is with you, right now.

Reflection Question: Write a prayer asking the Holy Spirit to reveal Himself to you.

Prayer
Father, thank You for sealing me with Your Spirit. Guide me by Your Spirit. Give me sensitivity to the Spirit. In Jesus’ name, amen.
