Scattering the Proud

Scattering the Proud

Mary’s heart overflowed with praise, declaring, “My spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior” (v. 47). As she spoke this profound Magnificat, she could see a world controlled by politicians in Rome and religious leaders in Jerusalem. These people seemed to have all the advantages.

But Mary experienced a different dimension. She saw how God “regarded the lowly state of His maidservant” (v. 48). No matter how things might appear, she realized that God would exalt the lowly and “put down the mighty from their thrones” (v. 52).

Mary saw how God scatters the proud in “the imagination of their hearts” (v. 51). He was not impressed with their knowledge or their positions of temporary power. He exalted not those confident in themselves but the humble.

God still “resists the proud” (James 4:6). He still hates pride (Proverbs 8:13). As Jesus taught, “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted” (Matthew 23:12).

We see people driven by a desire for control to advance their own careers to achieve fame and success. But God sees the world a different way. He still exalts the humble. The greatest in His sight are those with a servant’s attitude (Matthew 23:11-12).

Ask God to help free you from pride. Humble yourself before Him. Learn to depend on His Word and be led by His Spirit. Like Mary, be ready to serve Him and do His will.
